You was right about Diesel, he got the idea from an exibit in a museum he saw when he was 12 years old.

They are called compression ignition engines due to the fact, as you rightly said, its the heat of the air compressed by the piston that ignites the fuel, this can be almost any combustable liquid and some manufactureres still call them heavy oil engines.

Petrols are spark ignition engines.

I know that, now i see what you was getting at. When i was at collage doing my apprentiship i remember them saying in theory you could run a diesel on water as water is made of oxygen and hydregon which is the most explosive gas, doubt anyone has tried it wouldnt last long if it did run

Why is it not called an "Akroyd-Stuart" engine?!

Good question as they both invented similar engines, maybe they use Diesels design as it could be more efficient

Mabey you guys had better start up your own forum "dieselheads.co.uk"

ffs you'll be trying to transplant a 2.5di engine into your Z's next :p

Thats something from my miss spent apprentiship on coaches then lol apart from i used to come home smelling like a diesel pump

Ahh another PSV mechanic then, served my apprenticeship on buses too, before moving onto HGV's

Twin turbo diesel eh?

Hmmmmm..................................

Hmmmmm got me thinking now........ lol....nope fook that I'll leave the oil burner in the pug and keep the Z as it is thanks

I saw the light  and went onto building dragster engines and repairing customers American cars for a firm that used to be in Canvey, only because i was into the yanks at the time and owned a Dodge Charger and used to get my spares off the guy. Head gasket went he said i could fix it in his workshop, then offered me a job, before packing it in altogether, except you never really pack it in. I done my apprenticship at UMBH coaches that used to be at the top of pier hill in Southend.

lol it only took me about 18 years to see the light and come off the tools, still heavily of involved with the transport industry but dont get my hands as dirty nowadays :).

Do miss working on motors at times, and is one of the reasons I bought a Z, so that I could work on it to keep my hand in.

BMW do a 3.0 twin turbo diesel, uses one small turbo and one large, quite clever. (where was on their 3.0 twin turbo petrol they use two small turbos like on the ZX) IIRC 272bhp in standard trim, but being a diesel it can be made more powerful very easily, simple ECU remap and another 30-40 bhp can be obtained from it i believe

I thought my days of getting my hands shitted up with greese where well and truly over apart from general maintanence, then i bought a zed :headvswal  but i wouldnt be without it, with all their problems, only trouble is when it goes wrong i know what got to be done and whats involed then think ffs, sometimes ignorence is bliss

Why do diesel engines become smokey with age?

I must be the PCV's again

diesels as in any engine will only run as long as you look after them and maintain them properly, in marine application such as what i work with, the engines run for hours and hours non stop, but we have a huge ammount of planned maintenance to carry out to look after them, i could write a ten page essay on diesel maintenance, but I'll spare you the boredom.
