1. I recently did the clear rear indicator conversion. only done one side so far but all went fine but strangely now every time i switch on the lights the rear light doesnt come on (either both bulbs or one or other of them) and i have to go round to the rear and give the unit a tap on the front and it is fine. tried looking for a loose connection but cant find anything. Anyone heard of this problem before?

ย

2. I tried to check the ecu error codes but shorting the two pins on the consult plug with a paper clip i was short on space and couldnt really see what was going on with the light but now the yellow engine light does not flash on at all when i turn the ignition on like it is meant to with the battery light etc. I guess this is not a good idea that this light isnt working if i do develop and engine fault. everything else seems fine. is there a fuse that just controls this light?

Are you saying the light dont come on at all or comes on but dont flash? Did you short between the ign and chk pins? The methord you used isnt the safest way to check for error codes incase you short the wrong pins out, its a bit longer doing it through the ECU but safer. Try doing it through the ecu under the passenger floor click see if that makes a difference. You might have just blown the bulb on the dash light if it dont come on at all

The two problems might be related. Here's a story, not a solution...

ย

I got a Z with a botch fog light to get it through an MOT. There was a simple switch added to the dash with a wire feed right through the car to a reversing light bulb that had been painted red. Switch it on and one reversing light glowed red - MOT pass. But, one wire in the circuit near the reversing light had been cut to stop the red bulb lighting when selecting reverse gear.

ย

Only down-side was that the check engine light was always on. So, what the 'bodger' did was remove the boot courtesy light bulb - hey presto, no check engine light.

ย

As soon as I replaced the boot compartment light, the check engine light came on so what I had to do was remove the bodge completely and re-connect the cut reversing wire.

ย

And at MOT time I repace the bodge and remove the boot light.

ย

...it sounds to me like you've a bad earth somewhere around the rear lights...

Good luck

Itโ€™s a strange one. Think it is just a poor connection in the rear lights. Will have to get my multimeter and sandpaper out and check which connection it is.

The engine warning light is a bit bizarre. Have just been out to check the error codes with the turning the pot on the ecu method and the warning light flashed away so the bulb is ok. Why would the engine warning light not come on at all when starting? There is a good chance I sorted the wrong 2 pins when using the paper clip method to check for codes. What damage could this do?

ย

Anyway, I was able to check the codes and I am getting a code 21 which is a ignition circuit problem but the car is running fine. It is not a historic code as the battery was left off recently. The ptu is a relatively new looking series 2 and recently cleaned connectors on that and one coil packs when I had my recent starting problem. Could I have a problem with the ignition that I am not aware of? Or could it be linked with the non-working engine warning light as I might of shorted the wrong pins as one of the ones of pins you are meant to short is the IGN pin. Or could it just be something to do with my immobilizer that must cut the ignition circuit somehow?
