Don't want to change the exterior , as Zed's a beautiful anyway...but under the bonnet is a different matter. First things first, Cambelt Change - £350, auto oil box cooler £200....still have 2950 to spend....what should I do next? Suspension, brakes, engine mods...

And what the max boost I can run on a standard car, without blowing a hole in it?

Featured Replies

Air Filter (Apexi)

Exhaust (Mongoose or similar)

Brakes (R33/34 Upgrade)

Suspension (Shocks & Springs)

Boost controller & ECU chip (14/15psi)

Boost & Water Temp gauges

Lightened Front Pulley (SGP)

Also depends on how much of the work you are going to do yourself. Labour can be expensive on Zeds.

Work on it myself that's a laugh... My talents as a grease monkey are legendary...but for all the wrong reasons. I'll be getting someone else to do the work...

what wheels you have ? they always make a difference !

Expensive ones.... The wheels where already new when I bought the car, not the standard Z wheels.

Poly bush the whole suspension then brakes and then up the power or you might find you can't keep it on the road.

best thing you could do,turn it into a sportscar ;)

Paul.

Really thinking of doing the manual conversion. Zcentre will do it for £1600... Hyeline performance have advised that they'll match this (they're based in Cardiff). But that's an over the winter job I think. Gonna enjoy it this summer, with only a few mods. It already has a full Apexi SS exhaust system, but apart from that it's standard.

Apexi induction kit is next, then suspension, brakes etc...then I'll start on the engine mods.... I'd like to get it to about 450 rwhp then stop there.... Only 150 ish to go.

I'm also planning on getting the interior done.... the car is British Racing green so Black and Green it has to be.... Have had a quote of £800 for this...

Firstly get it handling spot on, this could save your life, and will make a hell of a difference!!

- Rebuild your rear subframe

- Rebush all your arms

- New Shocks

- New Springs

- New braided brake lines

- Uprated Anti-Roll bars

- 3 pairs of adjustable suspension arms

- New Tyres

- Get it all laser aligned

Then sort out the personal things, that make a difference to you the driver.

- New interior - this is where you are most of the time

- 99 spec components - rear lights/front bumper

- HID headlights

Then use what you have left to have a play with the engine:

- Full timing belt change and service

- Hardpipes

- Induction Filter

- New exhaust

- Lightened pulleys

- Boost Controller

Not Much then

Manual conversion ready to go in ! fully fitted for £1400 here and you can have the car back after just a week ! plus we can poly bush it and uprate your ecu while its here !

Brakes and Handling first IMO then Make sure your engine and Turbo's are healthy befor you start turning up the wick.

Take your car to Paul at SWZ is the best advice I can give as he specializes in Zeds, I wouldn't take it to Hyeline.

Do this with these if its the only thing you ever do.

to be honest matey, with just the goals you have mentioned here "about 450 rwhp then stop there...." (thats about 530+ fly wheel HP) you have a proper project ahead of you!

as far as modding a zed goes, especially if you are not going to be doing any of the work your self, under £3K is not going to get you very far on engine mods.

im just coming to the end of my project with my zed- brief was for 500HP at the fly, now i have ended up with closer to 500HP at the rear wheels... i set aside £5K for the zed, and my final bill has come to over £13K for just the mechanical side of modifications!

trouble is, it always takes time to achieve anything with a zed- individual jobs can be quick, but then it is always much much cheaper to get as much done at once as you can afford.

my bill got so large because once i had accepted i was going to spend over budget, i knew it would take alot longer to build, nad therefore i would be able to put more money aside for it over time... made sense to me! you prob wont do every thing i have (but you should if you want this power!)... things like... rear subframe, poly bushes, cusco diff, custom single race exhaust, twin filter, new engine, engine rebuild, JWT530BB's, twin 'coolers, koyo rad, injectors, full suspension replacement- shocks, camber, arms, rods, new gearbox, clutch, boost control, guages, new seats, traction control, 350z brembos, wide wheels, custom map...

my point is however you look at it, these are old cars, and if you want to modify them into modern day super cars- and it can be done- there are many things that have to be changed.

finally, my advice to you would be to spend the £3K on making sure your zed

1). won't break on you.

2). is safe to drive.

3). looks like a car you want to invest in.

winter is the time for saving up and engine modding if you are not going to do it your self- the summer is nearly here, just keep it working and enjoy it!

SWZ have a good deal lined up for you with the manual conversion (£1400). then i would use the money you would have saved on servicing it (i imagine SWZ would include fluids in their quote), and get the oil cooler linked up to the new manual box, get the cambelt done, maybe look into boost control (can get a blitz SBC-ID supplied and fitted for £500)- and enjoy your transformed summer ride!

Yes, Im afraid 450 rwhp on your budget just is'nt possible.

Its about a 250hp increase over stock, not 150. You would need Bigger turbos, Injectors, Intercoolers, Manifolds..etc and ideally forged pistons with engine rebuild.

I would go for -

Induction (£100)

exhaust (£300)

ECU remap and Boost increast to 1bar (£100)

Manual Conversion (£1400)

KYB AGX and Eibach springs (£500)

Anti-roll bars (£25)

GTR Brake conversion (£500-£750)

Interior retrim (£500-£750)

Set of Gauges (£150-£300)

replace worn bushes with polybushes (£100-£500)

HID Conversion (£150)

Those change will transform the car! :)

I would also recomend the following for reliablity improvements :

EFI Wiring loom replacment

Replace all water hoses with Water plenum bypass

Series2 PTU

I didn't say that I was going for 450 rwhp, on 3.5K.... 450rwhp and then stop...I've got 3.5K ready to start the mods this year.... I've looking at a 2 year project initially...

Take your car to Paul at SWZ is the best advice I can give as he specializes in Zeds, I wouldn't take it to Hyeline.

Any particular reason?

Manual conversion then ?

Hi Paul, what will I get for my 3.5K if I where to bring the car to you? Or should we discuss this offline?
