My Depot has an opening for an ASLEF Branch secretary am thinking of standing for. Im not too sure whats involved apart from a lot of paper work and corresponding between ASLEF Head office, the members and the DFC, but will be sent on courses. I just wondered if any one else has done any Union Rep work and if its rewarding?

Imo only take it if you can really stick up for people.

Our union reps are shite and hated by most people because they do FA 100% of the time

In fact my shop steward fo rmy area got me in trouble by letting the boss tell him what to do, how does that work?

 

If its a shop stewards job then you have to be hated by all and strong enough to stand your ground to both sides.

Im a shop steward at my place, trust me, its the most thankless task ever!!

 

On the plus side, if you have/build, a good working relationship with your boss, there can be a few good perks!!

 

It is volentary, so you work hard without any monitary benifit, and if you dont know your companys terms and conditions, You will need to know them, inside out.

 

You will also have to learn employment law as well!!

 

I've been doing it for 4 years, thouroughly enjoy it, but the first few years were a huge learning curve!!

Probably a bit like being a committee member... like shunter said... a thankless task and not really worth the effort for all the shit you get... But good luck with it if you want to do it mate...
