1940s vintage biplane rides with open cockpit - leather helmet and goggles - the authentic "Biggles" experience! Step back 60 years and experience the joys of a flight in a classic biplane, such as De Havilland's famous Tiger Moth.

Prices vary at some locations - price band 'B' enables the voucher recipient to choose from the full list of venues.

The flight starts with a briefing during which the pilot will run through safety considerations and explain what will happen during the flight. Then, with foot and handholds pointed out, you clamber into the front cockpit and one of the ground crew will assist you with the harness.

Then will come the almost theatrical performance of "swinging the prop". "Switches off, petrol on, throttle closed, suck in", followed by "contact", then with an almighty heave on the prop, the engine will burst into life - hopefully! Even the taxiing is an art form as the pilot weaves to and fro craning his neck out to one side to see where he is going. It's hard to explain the exhilaration of take-off in an aircraft like this as it shudders and purrs, eager to get airborne.

The windscreen in fact does a very good job of keeping the breeze to a minimum and once up and away you will quickly get used to the engine noise which fades to a loud but comforting rumble.

The pilot will demonstrate a few gentle turns then it's "you have control" and you will discover what a light touch is required to keep the wings straight and level or maintain height through a turn. Any signs of enthusiasm will be met with the offer to demonstrate more exciting manoeuvres, even a loop if the aircraft is cleared for aerobatics.

This activity is best suited to the warmer months as many operators put their aircraft in for hibernation from November to March, however the hardy people in Kent and Gloucestershire operate throughout the year.

Restrictions: minimum height 4'6", maximum weight 16 stone. Some operators can take up to 18 stone, please ring our customer service team on 01959 578100 for more information.

Spectators: Welcome to come and watch.
