I've recently purchased a 95 TT 2/2 Auto from Japan.

The acceleration from what I've read isn't as earth shattering as it potentially could be...

Is there anything that can be done to change the gear ratio's and as such improve acceleration from 0-62?

Without dropping names, Mclaren have done it with the podgy 500 SL, in the shape of the SLR, so I'm assuming something similar can be done to a Zed Auto?

Anyone out there done this?

Thanks

If you wanted a really quick 0-60 car you'd have been better with a small 4x4 hatch like a Pulsar GTiR - the 300ZX is really a GT car.

The auto is actually quicker to 100mph than the manual so the box isn't really a problem at your stage.

Replacing the diff with the NA version really helps at the expense of top speed but I like being able to do 185+ when needed.

There's nothing like showing off by flooring it at 120mph and seeing cars disappear in your rear mirror like they were standing still :D

First thing on an import is to fit the auto cooler which UK cars have, otherwise your box WILL die quite soon from overheating.

You just need to do the usual power mods (350bhp is relatively easy and cheap to achieve) and that will knock the 0-60 down.

You can get traction and launch control from Racelogic which I and a few others have fitted, but it's not really going to improve things on stock power.

When you've got plenty of power you might consider a manual conversion if you really want to cane it off the line reliably.

Haven't tested my 0-60 in a while but it must be around 4 secs I think :)

How about buying a McLaren SLR and putting the engine and box in your Z? ;)

LOL! its only a 5.5 AMG V8 out of an SL, I can price just an engine up if you like!! :D

my manual was timed at 4.7 with basic mods ;)

I wouldn't have one if you gave it to me! LOL

I truly hate Merc's and BMW's :smash:

Always driven by tw@ts with too much money and no taste in cars but they're expensive so they'll have one to go on the drive  :xxx:

Round here every other car is a Merc or BMW "driven" by a dumb blonde with a rich husband LOL :headvswal

I think you probably meant to put this post in one of the other forums!

i think the auto gets quoted at 7-odd secs because of the way they launch it. they must just wait for the go then press the pedal. if you dont mind abusing it a bit (which will make the oil cooler mod and regular fluid changes a must) i think you can get fairly close to the manual.

on stopwatch timing (so not really accurate but an idea) i was getting 5.5's in the manual and 6.0's in the auto.

I was led to believe that the Stock Manual and Auto TT's 0-60mph times were very close, hence thats why the Auto TT had slightly smaller Turbo's to compensate for this(Quicker Spool Up).

I have Reciently converted to stock Manual turbos and there is a Definate difference!! My auto turbos used to be at full boost by at least 2800 aprox and now the Manual Turbos do not fully boost untill at least 4000rpm aprox

So there is quite a difference in the Turbo setup.

I am sure this subject has been brought up before.

Greg has also changed his Turbos from Auto to manual with Simular results!

I thought Mac 1 had the quickest Zed on here or the Most Money :D :)

He thinks that too but he's yet to give me a race :D

full boost after 4,000? my manual starts at 1800 and its at full by 3,000-3500 every time. the auto doesnt appear to start boost untill 1500-1800ish but then builds to full by 2800-3200.

the last time i saw a Z take untill 4,000 on stock turbo's was my last manual running on 5 1/2 cyls. lol

and theroetically the auto CAN be faster to accelerate (doesnt have to back off for a gearchange before 60) but in reality this is VERY hard to replicate.

i think when nissan claimed the figures they just calculated what was possible from x ammount of traction, power, weight, etc. then when people road tested them allsorts of figures came up due to different people testing them in different ways.

if they both sit at the lights, in gear but with NO throttle movement and wait for the light to change then go the manual laughs at the auto (tried it) but if you abuse-launch the auto and manual there is little in it.

i was still getting (very) slightly better times in the manual though.

I said Approx 4000! Greg told me there would be quite a difference and there was. The point is there is quite a difference between manual and auto turbos and for a reason. :)

I would be interested to see the difference in time's between a Manual and Auto with Simular mods and aftermarket turbos as they do not do Aftermarket Auto Turbos so they would both have to be the same setup and i would imagine then that the auto would be alot slower than a manual even with launch control.
