Worked for company once that bid on a contract to design one.

 

Big 2 mile dia concrete tunnel is about all I can remeber about it.

How surprised was I when Discovery "Megamachines" did a docu on the one in Austria, or somewhere like that.

We at work have done a fair bit of sub contract work for this machine, namely the 25k gold plated contact rings for the pumping slot tube......... Basically the tube that the atoms are crashed head on in.

 

This project is immense. It is the largest particle accelerator in the world, the Americans wanted in on it apparently, and we said no lol...

 

I seen a bit on discovery......... the tunnel they dug is MASSIVE in diameter, and about 20 miles in cicumference i think? I stand corrected as it's been a long time since i heard that data. Our contact rings are simply lost in it's vastness, but it's nice to know they're at the heart of the project.
