flip it over and check that the ram is seated right in the ram slot, if not take it out blow in the slot to remove any dust and replace the ram (make sure you are earthed, you do this by touching a radiator while doing it) and try again, also try resetting the bios.

if you have got a gfx card in there try updating the drivers and checking for conflicts in the computer/hardware/properties section

if not gfx card try reinstalling the motherboard vga drivers again.

also check for viri and trojans etc...

cheers pk but i think its something to do with the hdd cos my old one boots up fine. im just upgrading to a 20 gb from a 6 gb. its a secondhand hdd but has been formatted. i just think that the partition which contained the critical info for bootup is missing and wont allow the cd to run for install.

any idea of how to solve it. the laptop is old its a panasonic cf-71 pentium 2 300mhz

i only really use it for datascan but a bigger hdd will be useful for pics etc.

ok try partioning the hardrive first, give it say an 8mb partition and the rest is the main install partition, it could be that its looking for the recovery partition. i had a laptop do that once a compaq laptop and old 7200 i think. if no joy with 8mb try upping it to 20mb.

put your old drive in and boot off the cd and see how big the partition is then make the same size on your other one.

Try throwing it across the room and then restarting it. :D Might not work but you feel better :p

thanks for advice but wtf  you lost me trojans, wtf are they? Have mother board driver but would i have to re-install windows etc if i re-install mother board drivers?

viruses and trojans are nasty things that will mess up your box of bits!! use a good spyware scanner some thing like xoftspy to scan and remove them.

the only security/antivirus/firewall software i officially support and supply with all installations and new builds is kaspersky internet suite6 for home users.

http://www.kaspersky.co.uk, goto trial downloads, download security suite6 fully working for 30 days, if you have a crappy anti virus software like nortons on your pc get rid of it before installing this one.

also if you have got a graphics card then you just reinstall the drivers for that or check for upgrades from the manufacturers website.

as for the motherboard drivers if you dont have a gfx card and are using the motherboards vga chipset for the display then after wiping the drive you fresh install windows xp and after going through the setup and then the authorisation ( you will have may have to phone microsoft 24 hour free auth line if its not letting you re auth it.) then when it gets to desktop then install all drivers off the motherboard cd and reinstall all your software etc

i think it must be the motherboard/graphic card MB is a winfast 6100k8MB think has built in graphics card, pc done it ever since it was built approx 3 month ago since then its had a total software re-install as put new hard drive in it, and still does it, have macafee security software

a winfast motherboard??

may be a winfast gfx card, if you open the side of the case up you will see if theres gfx card in there, there will be some plastic slots there if any of those are taken up and your monitor plugs into that then its a gfx card if it plugs into a connector on the back of the motherboard then it uses the motherboard chipset.

if you look at this picture you can see the slots and two boards in them.

Is your new HD serial ATA, cause i had bother installing mine the system just wouldnt recognise it. i wanted to use the new drive as the primary drive and keep the old as a slave, I could format the new drive using the old PATA drive but as soon as i removed the PATA the system ignored the SATA drive. ended up using the old drive for the operating system and booting up, with the new drive as storage

if the new drive is sata then you can set the bios to sata ata and not sata raid, if its sata raid then you need the raid drivers installed while installing the software, you can slipstream this as i explained to someone on here the other day.

if its set to sata ata then it uses ide/ata mode and will boot as normal.

lol I went through all that and mine still didnt work, checked the internet help forums etc, still couldnt get it so i gave up after 2 days pissing around, it works fine as it is now so ill leave it.

just sounds like the same fault as hellraiser is haveing

my mistake its a Foxconn 6100KMB looking inside it looks as tho the monitor plugs into the MB so i assume its a chipset. Just read the literature on the MB and it says the driver comes with chipset software guessing thats the prob it hasnt read the cd properly?

sounds like a duff graphics card. New motherboard time if you're onboard. Fixed 4 other peoples dead graphics cards in as many weeks, and in the process of replacing everything except the screen in my laptop following a graphics card failure, MXM my fookin arse...

Must be the season for it :p

In the mean time. Right click your desktop, go to properties, settings, advanted, troubleshooting and turn the acceleration all the way down. That may well offer a solution.
