Has any member ever made or had made for them, a custom exhaust using aftermarket back boxes.

Wondered about the problems encountered and costs involved.

I've made 3 in stainless for previous cars and I'm just starting one for the zed now.

I'm using aftermarket middle boxes, but making the back boxes.

To be honest it's a bit of a ballache doing a full system yourself. Unless you have access to a proper mandrel bender then it's a case of cut and shut with straight bits and pre-formed bends.

I'm only doing it myself cos I don't trust anyone else to make a decent job.

I had mine custom made to fit my bodykit and it's adjustable for length and moves out to the sides too so it can be perfectly positioned.

Did a great job and they have jigs for the Z so you can get it delivered and fit yourself if you want.

They do some very fancy custom stuff and manifolds, downpipes etc.

There's a pic of some Z pipes in the workshop I think.

I'm not totally convinced about the need for the center boxes. I don't run them at the moment, and removing them didn't make much difference to noise level or performance.

Is the H pipe bit really required. My system is completely split from front to back.

yes

yes

Why?

it acts as a balance pipe i supose ,

As is mine. No need for any balance pipes.

Made mine up from scratch using a 3 inch bore straight through to 3" bore back box with bugger all silencing and 5 " tail pipes.... The performance increased from my old Mongoose system and she is fooking loud!!

just because. ;)

It does improve power. I suppose an NA Zed with headers fitted would not require it though. I'm trying to find some solid evidence to post before I answer properly - I'll be back... ;)

I know it smooths out the exhaust pulses which I assume gives a more even back pressure, but what does this do to turbo cars whose turbos isolate the exhaust from the combustion chamber.

I currently have cats fitted! I wonder if JP exhausts could make some straight through pipes to replace the cats? These guys are only up the road from me!!!

I think they already do them - in the pics it shows "Nissan 300 front pipes" so presume those are the ones ;)

Prices are pretty good too, I paid about £450 for a full custom Cat back system. I fiitted it myself but had a few problems with it rattling and took it in to them and they welded a couple of extra hangers on for free.

Very helpful people and always have some unusual cars in.

They were working on a Caterham and an old Ferrari last time I was there.

My system is about 4.5 years old and still looks like new so decent quality.

Didn't one of the ends fall off at Trax last year?

Many companiess will custom make exhausts, and there are a lot of Zeds out there with custom pipework from the likes of Powerflow, Alunox....etc.

There is'nt a lot of choice of Z32 exhausts in the Uk without going custom.

Mine is custom but from the cat back only.

Its my understnading that the stock H-pipe is actually there for noise resonance purposes. Removing it causes a lot of exhaust frove in the 2-3k rpm range.

The X pipe would be a better setup for TT performance.

yes i purcahsed the tailpipes to for a temp fix as my original ones were fubar.. cut and shut them onto the orinianal pipes.the pipes rotted through a few months later and i used the stainless tailpipes and then had custom stanless pipes made up to fit them tail pipes from a local motorsport shop.
