drove the car last night and she just died on me. seemed as though the car had suddenly run out of fuel. arked her up and went back for her this morning and she started straight up. again today its done it twice and after a few mins it starts again. sometimes starts then dies straight away. anyways got her home eventually and parked her on the drive. left ticking over for an hour while i pulled and proded all the connectors on the engine hoping that i wud come across a dodgy connection but shes still running. any ideas.

another thing, i have noticed two brass valves near the front of the engine.. one on each side of the main intake pipes . they look as though they can be adjusted on the top with a 17mm spanner. they both have a pipe about 1/2 inch which runs to one of the pipes that connects to the intercooler. could these be boost jets?

any ideas as to the cutting out would be apreciated, i thought it could be the old alarm system arming itself. the guy who i bought the car off says it never worked so i just took his word for it. i have the alarm buttons and have fitted it with a new battery but still cant get the alarm to operate??

also i had the turbo pipes of the other day when i was doing the vvt springs. since putting them back on i have noticed that the turbo on the drivers side seems to whistle. could i have an air leak which would cause the car to run too rich?

PTU?

Yes you have an air leak - check all jubilee clips from the turbo outlet to the TBs...

hi andy just been and removed and checked all pipes. one on the drivers side has a split about 1/2 inch long at end i have managed to sort it by pushing pipe further onto throttle body and covering with insulating tape and the jubilee clip. i know this is only a temp repair but its stopped the whistle.

wat are those brass valves on either side of the engine at the front? i had a look and the pipe runs from the turbo then the brass valve then the pipe runs into the large pie that feeds the intercoolers. are these boost jets. if so how do i adjust them correctly. i am gonna check and see if the ecu has been socketed

Them valves is bleed valves ;) Do not touch them - hopefully they've been set up correctly - must be set up so they both bleed the same.....

you reckon the car has a standard ecu?

did u have a look see if u had the wiper linkages andy

Yeah I got them bud :) Do you have access to a conzult? If you have you could download the .bin file from the ECU and I could have a look see if its been changed?

sounds like the PTU that Andy mentioned above. do you know if your PTU is a series 1 or series 2, as the series 1 is prone to cutting out, usually at the worst time.

what is the ptu and where is it. how much for 1

Number 5

£20-£40 for a Series 1 (prone to failure)

£110-£140 for a series 2 (bombproof)

well ollie answered your last two questions perfectly. it is the Power Transfer (or is it Transistor?) Unit. seeing as youve been doing some work under there, make sure that either of the plugs either side (top and bottom if you have a series 1 like in the picture) have not been knocked loose. i managed to do this while i was working on my radiator last year and the car sounded like a helicopter (and fired on 2 cyls) until i plugged it back in properly :o
