I have Apexi AVCR & SAFC controllers fitted, my boost is currently running at 0.7 and a half bar. I want to raise this to 1 bar, but don't know how to do it!?! The controllers were fitted when I bought the car.

Can anyone help, I have looked at the Apexi instructions online, but can't make head nor tail of them!!! May be just me (thick), but just looking at them on there, seems VERY complicated for a novice!!!!

hi mate ive not used the Apexi AVCR but i do have the SAFC2 - the latter has nothing to do with boost. just make sure you dont touch it as you can damage the engine if you adjust the air/fuel mix!

does the AVCR mention ratio and gain?

just to clarify, is it the avcr with the blue or black screen, previous & next buttons on bottom right, and 4 arrow keys above?

Chris.

sounds s--t but hey throw some more money away!!

Well, it is the one posted above by Graham S anyway!

Yes, I think it mentions these two things in the instructions I looked at online

when you are in the screen which shows your boost levels, press previous until you get to screen showing monitor, settings, etc.

press down to highlight settings, it will either be A B or OFF, if you want to set high boost press right till it shows B, press next, this will show you what your boost controller is set at.

to alter your boost levels you need to press right to highlight it then use the up n down arrows to reach your desired boost level.

then press previous till you get the monitor, settings, etc screen, highlight monitor n press next till its on the original screen you started on.

if, when the car is driven, the boost level is too low or too high, go back to the boost settings and use the duty setting to rectify. if boost is too high, turn the duty down or if boost too low turn duty up.

HTH.

ok first of all you want to be absolutely sure how much boost you are running in real-time. do you have an AFTERMARKET boost gauge, or are you certain you can read the current boost from the AVCR?

you said you were "currently running at 0.7 and a half bar" - can you be clearer on this? half a bar is safety boost, but the AVCR would over-ride that so your Z wouldnt run safety boost if the ecu detects a problem. stock boost is 0.65 bar (9.5 psi).

next you want to be absolutely sure that you have an aftermarket ecu or eprom installed. the stock chip won't map fuel correctly when you start to go over stock boost and your car will run mega-lean and start to det.

the 'ratio' is commonly the maximum boost you want to run - if you cant find the right documentation then its a matter of careful experimentation as to what ratio equals what max psi. i had to do the same with my Blitz - that used gain and ratio too.

Gain is how quickly the EBC lets the boost build up. higher gain means faster build-up but can/will result in overboost, where the boost level will go ABOVE your ratio momentarily, before it is cut back down to size.

usual setups will be either a high ratio (say 15psi on stock tubs etc.) and a safe gain (so it builds up to 15 safely), or a lower ratio (say 13psi) and a higher gain (so it builds up quicker, spikes at 15 [which is borderline safe] and drops down to 13)

if you cant find someone who knows how to set them up, pref. with a rolling road, then the best way to do it is experiment, with someone else in the car either driving or setting the controller.

dont forget, one wrong adjustment and its goodbye engine and turbos!!!!

lol, ok Chris jumped in there with a little more specific info while i was typing that up. hope this all helps!

lol.

as skyline dave says, you need to have at least a chipped ecu to be running 1bar, and simple things like always running V-power fuel (or similar), and good plugs ( i personally use DENSO IRIDIUM ).

I was told when bought car that it had uprated ECU, but never checked that, and don't know which ECU it has! I always run V-Power anyway, and not sure which plugs she has now, but I have a new set of NGK (Nissan) PFR6-B 11-B ready to fit as not sure when plugs last changed. I have just had the cambelt changed (on Thursday) at Zedworld, she has HKS Super Drager single outlet exhaust, Greddy boost gauge, oil temp gauge and water temp gauges. Blitz BOVs, uprated IT's, engine & gearbox oil cooler etc.

I guess my boost is 0.75 bar on my white Greddy boost gauge, it is half a mark after the 0.7 mark on gauge. So it is above stock boost already, but not that much! I would like to up it to the SAFE max with stock tubs, at least I think she has stock tubs!

I forgot, I also have an Apexi SAFC unit, doesn't this allow control of the fuel/air mixture etc?

yes youre right. this can be just as dangerous as the AVCR so best to leave well alone unless you know what youre doing. mine was set up by professionals on a RR and i just use it for display purposes as it shows TPS, knock, speed, revs etc. TBH ive heard that Zs dont give much of a response when you tweak the mixture when compared to other japs. but it still looks good ;)

best to check your ecu mate. pull the carpet up from passenger footwell, open the 'floorboards' up and you should see a gold coloured box. open this up and youll be able to see the eprom inside near the bottom right corner of the gold box. if the outside of the ecu box doesnt give you a clue (eg. Apexi or Blitz or Mine's etc.) then the eprom should tell you (maybe JWT etc.)

Ok, cheers for all the advice m8, will have a look at the ECU soon as I get time and see what that tells me is.
