Did a search, but couldn't find anything and have a few questions about the centre console and ICE :)

 

My Swiss '93 ZXTT 2+2 manual has a 90's Blaupunkt radio/cassette player in the top mounting and a Fischer cassette storage unit in the space below (don't know if this was an aftermarket thing or in from new).

 

The cable to my boot floor mounted CD changer melted (!) after a track day, and I thought it was a good time for an upgrade.

 

I wanted to take out the cassette storage unit (which I don't use), but there is nothing behind it but the wires of underdash space... :(

 

Ideally, I'd like to have a centre console with one slot for the radio/CD and use the other slot as a storage space for sunglasses, phone, etc. Is there anything like that for the ZX? What has everyone else done?

 

I've seen legrath has a different surround on his signature pic. Tried to send a pm but for some reason couldn't. Is that a one-off, or are there more useful ICE holders than the stock one available anywhere, as that cassette thingy is a waste of space?

 

Just wondering what my options are to mount new ICE. Is a new surround needed if I go out and buy a modern radio/CD combo, or will it slot right in? What problems could I have? Are the connectors still the same as in the 90's so I can just unplug the old and plug in the new? :confused: As you can see, I know nothing about it – don't know if the stock radio unit space is in a DIN slot or ISO, or even if that is the same! :D

Did you just buy the black lower compartment with the sprung flap [Z32IN50C], then have the whole centre bit sprayed like that?

Yes mate, they are all black as standard to match the centre console.

Is the stock slot OK for modern radios then? Just out with the old and in with the new using the same connectors?

The slot is the correct size for a new headunit so no worries there, you may have to change the wiring, I had to so soldered in an ISO connector so if I change the headunit in the future I will be an easy swap.

The slot size for a radio is DIN size, just about, its a tight squeeze, well on mine it was anyway.

ISO is the term for the connector block on the back of the modern head-unit. If your car doesnt have an ISO block wired in already, and you are unsure what you are doing, take it to a car audio specialists and get them to wire one in. Most modern radios will then plug right into this ISO socket.

edit: of course if you are handy with a soldering iron and heat-shrink its quite easy to wire in an ISO connector yourself once you have identified all the wires - which can be a nightmare! If you go this route ill send you the wire colour codes that you need to join up.

You reckon a 90's Blaupunkt won't have the the ISO block then?
