Depends on colour of smoke. Ultimately it could be turbo's and they don't come cheap!

Probably turbos but still a bargain at that price! Worth replacing the PCV (breather) system to see if thats all thats causing the problem first....

As stated in the thread he said it's probably the seals...

Is this expensive? time consuming? Does he mean the gaskets in the exhaust? If I was to change the exhaust and gaskets, would this resolve the issue?

I wouldn't really say it was cheap if the tubs need doing....bearing in mind I put my car with a 22000 mile engine and loads of new and upgraded parts but in need of tubs up for sale on this forum and you lot offered me £1500!!!!!

If you got a garage to do then your looking at £1200-£1500 to get the engine out, turbos reconditions and engine put back in.

Unfortunatly Changing exhaust will not resolve issue, at best it could tempoarily hide the issue.

...no he means turbo seals, not exhaust gaskets.

In such a case, smoke is caused by oil leaking past the turbo seals and burning in the exhaust.

However, its worth getting the car checked at a specialist to confirm that is the problem, as there are various causes for smoke...and smoke diagnosis can be difficult.
