Hi,

Just a quickie:

What is the darkest tinting you can legally have on the side windows in the UK? Is it a different rating for the rear quarter windows, rear screen and front door windows or is it all one standard?

Also, my car has original Japanese tinting on the rear screen. I've had a careful go at removing a small section by using a heat gun but the stuff won't budge. It also leaves adhesive residue on the window which turns rock solid when dried. Can anyone suggest an alternative method of getting it off? A local tinting company said they use solvents which "may" damage the interior - so I'm not so keen on letting them do it. Also, they want £110 for the privilege of removing some tint ... and another £300 to apply new tints!

Any/all feedback much appriciated as always!

Ta Ra!

something in my mind says 15% tint in front sides mate

Thank you very much indeed! I too thought it was 15% but the tinting company came up with a completely different figure. I get the impression they are cowboys - won't be using them!

So, from the PDF file (thanks hunnipie :)) I conclude that the side windows directly next to the driver's and passenger's head must allow 70% of the light through. The windscreen (!!) needs to allow 75% of the light through and there are no restrictions on rear side windows and/or rear hatch windows.

Cheers!

Dan

PS - Thanks Leigh - question for you: when are we getting together for a meal?! Call me when you get the chance please.

Sounds like a plan Leigh ... (yet again LOL) I will be in "gay" Holland this weekend back on Tuesday so lets touch base towards the end of next week.

Vehicle & Operator Services Agency (VOSA) LEGAL STATEMENT

Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 as amended specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows.

The Limits are:

Motor vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:

The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.

The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.

If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, the vehicle does not meet legal requirements. :p

mine are quite dark and i havent had any problems with the fuzz yet dont know what mine are though

30% tint is all thats allowed - HOWEVER, that includes any factory tint!! most cars have a tint as standard now days, most tinting film is illegal when applied over a standard tint on a side window!

Hmmm ... hadn't factored in the factory tinted glass. As my glass if JDM spec (ie bronze) I assume it carries a measureable rating.

Where would I need to go to get a reading with a light meter? The spanner monkeys at the tinting place local to me probably never heard of a light meter ...

Thanks for that very important bit of info Paul.

the tinting company we use are pretty clued up, & reckon most film would be illegal when placed over a glass with factory tint :(
