For thoes who dont know, I am a tennis coach and been a player, fan and coach for most of my life.

Today without doubt was the sadest moment in tennis history. Aged 38 and suffering from an obvious back problem after taking out Bagdatis in 5, Andre Aggasi bowed out of the game in 4 sets against a young J Becker in the US Open.

21 years of shear joy have ended, to me he was the most exciting player to ever of walked on the tennis court. He may not of been the statistitians "greatest player" but for thoes that followed he was without doubt the man that turned the game around following its slump in teh early 80's.

He just happens to be a nice guy too

Fortunatly we have a new breed that arnt too shabby.

Always loved watching Agassi play, the guy wore his heart on his sleeve and always gave 100%. The blokes playing today are good effective players, but have no apparent passion for the game. You've only got to listen to an interview of Andy Murray to see that, the guy sounds like a robot on anti depressants.

Agassi will be missed, sad day for tennis...

NZR Very Very Sad day

Bleeding hell !!! I though somthing serious had happened, goodness knows how you will cope when it does.

i have an ingrowing toenail, oh dear time to get back on the valium me thinks :D

the man that turned the game around following its slump in teh early 80's.

Yeah, 'cos Borg, McEnroe, Connors and Lendl were dead boring, weren't they?

OK me thinks you need some updating. in 1985 the ATP held a conferance as they had concerns about falling ticket sales and TV coverage for all but teh major event, Conors, Mac and Borg (who had retired) attended. All aggreed there was a genuine reason to be concerned.

Lendle started to make headway, but lets face it this guy was about as intresting as watching paint dry. Fantastic game, boring as fook.,

So just to put you right on a few things. aggasi didnt turn pro till 86. chang won the french aged 16 in 89 and that was the start of the new kids on teh block with sampras wining the US at 19 in 90. All in all Aggasi is the only person in history of the game to do a couple of things that all others havent. Here are a few

He is the only man to of won of 4 differnt types of surface. Laver, emerson, budge and perry all won on grass at the Aus, Wimbledon and US with teh french on clay.

He is the only man to of been in all 4 finals of teh slams & the olympics in the same year.

He is the only MAN to hold all 4 slams and the olympic tital.

He is the only tennis player who can keep bums on seats to a sell out crowd at 1am and have peak viewing figures around the world at teh same time.

He is the 2nd most famouse man on the plannet. ( people in the middle of nowhere with no TV and no clue what tennis is know who Aggasi is)

He also has 2 schools set up by himself and a childrens club all aimed at inner city children around teh las vagas area.

Now do yu realy want me to go on as I could back this up with quotes from the players themselves.

This wasnt a post for people to get snotty over, its was just a mark in passing to the mans carrer and the fact that he will be missed in a more noticable way than his peers.

Yeah. He will be a huge miss to the tennis world. Borg was always my man due to his style of play, but Aggasi just had that special character about him. Not like he`s dead or owt but he will be missed by so many tennis fans.

(Yes. I know its not a real mans game (so my friends keep telling me.).......etc etc...........) :p

ps. I really need to start playing again!!

You don't need to put me right on a few things 'cos A) I don't care and B) I never made any claims that Agassi was anything.

Your words: "following its slump in teh early 80's."

1985, which you seem so fond of (below), is by definition not the early 80s.

>>Now do yu realy want me to go on as I could back this up with quotes from the players themselves.

Knock yourself out, Mr. Patronising. I don't care.

I have nothing against Agassi, btw, I just wanted to put you right on your timescales.

A sad day indeed ... :(

He was one of the reasons I took up tennis and I've been very lucky to have met him AND played several games of tennis with him whilst I was living in DC and Florida back in the late eighties/early nineties. I "trained" at the Nick Bollettieri academy for a short while and he was a regular visitor/coach there. Always a colourful presence on court. I still can't believe how he manages to return practically every serve coming his way with such grace. He's a good man, colourful character and a superb player.

I hope he'll continue to play on the exhibition circuit.

I haven't played in years (shame on me ...) but that will soon change! ;)
