Hello all. I’m having problems with my Ipod and I was wondering whether there are any PC wizards out there that might be able to shed some light on the matter.

It was fine up until 2 weeks ago when I connected the USB to the PC to charge the ipod…and nothing happened. Everytime I try to connect the two I get an error message saying the device is unrecognised (Or something to that effect). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Ipod software (Twice) but it still didn’t fix the problem. The PC just doesn’t seem to recognise the ipod when its been connected.

I don’t think the USB cable has been damaged as it looks fine and I only bought the Ipod a few months back.

Any suggestions?

device unrecognised is normaly a weak signal on the cable, a bad cable or too many usb extension cables together will cause this.

usb cable has 4 wires, +5v -5v, data in, data out

try another port and change the cable if its still the same. Also you could try it in another pc to be sure its not your machine. I take it your other usb devices are working ok.

Can you use your ipod with Firewire instead? I use Firewire as that recharges my ipod and USB does not. But i think Apple have made ipods to charge from USB now as well.

I have installed Linux on my ipod to fully utillise the ipods potential, like being able to record audio at 44khz without getting some extra widget.

Did you get 2 wires with your ipod? mine has a usb one and some other one that fits into the plug, i think you can use both for downloading songs and charging.

hold menu and the middle (select) button down until the apple logo reappears that will reset it but not erase your songs.

if that doesnt help, try someone elses PC to see if there is a PC problem on your part. have you ever disconnected the ipod without ejecting? if so you might need to download the new 'ipod updater' from apple to format and reflash the the ipod.

also does your ipod have any dents? if none of this works and your ipod is dent free, go to:

http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod and follow the instructions from there, a courier will collect your ipod and send you another one if your within warranty. (i used to work for Apple if u cannot tell already).
