If you haven`t heard this before , it`ll test your lateral thinking .

Imagine a totalitarian state . A prisoner is being held in a cell which has two doors , one of which leads to freedom , the other to death . There are two guards in the cell : one ALWAYS tells the truth , the other ALWAYS tells lies . The prisoner , not knowing which guard is which , is allowed to ask one of them one question to choose the right door .

What should he do ?

Featured Replies

He asks one of the gaurds "If I ask the other gaurd which door is to freedom, which door will he tell me?"

If the gaurd is the one telling the truth he will tell you that the other gaurd will lie and give you the wrong door.

If the gaurd is the one that tells lies he will tell you the opposite door the other gaurd (who tells the truth) will tell you.

Therefore whichever door he tells you the other gaurd will say, you choose the other door!

Shoulda PM`d me and let members suffer for a while , then I would have announced you as the original winner and Nobel Prize candidate for

a) Quickest Logical Finker in The Whole Wide World

or

b) The only other guy on here who used to listen to Noel Edmunds on radio in the 80`s , when he was good .

:duffer: :)

Similar one is: You're running through the jungle being chased by a bunch of cannibals when you come to a fork in the road. There's a man standing there and he's either part of the cannibal tribe (in which case he ALWAYS lies) or he's from the goody tribe so tells the truth. You have to ask him a question to go the right way. One way is to the cannibal tribe and the other way is to the goody tribe and safety.

Whats the question?

Wasn't there something like this in the movie labyrynth too? more like the one above though.

lol, sorry...it took me long enough to write it, thought somebody might of beaten me.

p.s Im too young for radio in the 80's ;)
