This follows on from a thread i've just picked up on a gt4 board, it basically askes why do you currently drive a GT4 and where did the passion for cars come from. Well after one trip down memory lane i posted the below. SO the question is.. When did your passion for cars start and why did you end up driving a 300zx???

Here was my post.

I suppose it all started for me as a kid, i used to be a porsche nut, god knows why, maybe it was condorman and all those black 911's. Back then at the age of around 6 i went to Germany on hol with the folks and i was in Porsche heaven, they were everywhere, or so it seemed at the time.

Then I remember being on my push bike at a garage and a mk1 MR2 pulled in. What year did they come in B reg maybe? whats that around 1984? so i would have ben about 9 and thought they looked out of this world. Then a few years later after trips to the motorshow i remember seeing Honda integras ( the mk1 versions) and again drooling over MR2's, god knows how old i was then.

Next thing, i'm 17 and I can drive.. woo hoo no more push bikes for me and after dabbling with a mk1 x reg astra I found myself in a Burgandy D reg 1.3 escort, at a time when the car that me and my fellow apprentices aspired to was the orion Ghia 1.6i. Anyway this put the timeline at about 1992 and low and behold a new magazine, hit the shelves called MAX POWER. It was ace, full of Dimma Pugs and escort cosworths, fiesta rs turbos etc etc fantastic, i was hooked.

So i set about modding my 1.3 escort, one K&N, some spax spings and a set of speedline mistral alloys and my car was the dogs. I had big plans for that car, ie full rs turbo transplant, cosworth whaletail, the works. All inspired by the maxy P project car that was RS KIcker for those that remember, the greenish escort RS turbo they modded. Then for one clear moment, i saw the light and thought, dont waste your cash modding, just by and Escy RS Turbo, so i did at the ripe old age of 21/22.

After some alloys ( antera 121's) chipping, shocks and springs I had around 5 or 6 damn good years out of that car it was ace and in my eyes one of the most underrated cars out there , the only times it ever let me down was for a couple of starter motors and batteries.

Anyway after a while the need for more power tooi a hold and my eyes were dragged towards supras, 3 litres , twin turbos.. the slobber ran like a river, however i couldn afford one, then low and behold one day i should cast my eyes over a silver beauty, the like i had never seen before. I though it was one of the most beautiful cars i had ever seen on the road ( at least from the front)it was a nissan 300zx. One quick scout of auto trader revealed it was in my price range and it also had 3.0 tt like a Supra. Jobs a guddun,i got one, a blue one in the end. After modding the 300zx and taking it as far as I could afford to mod it, anf having been bitten by the drag racing bug, at the age of 29ish i decided i needed something that A- didint need 2 of everything like the 300 does, or B - was a bit lighter, better for dragging possibly track days and a bit cheaper 2 maintain ie didint need the engine pulling for every job.

So 4wd drive rally slags were the way forward, evo's were still pricey, everything before an evo 4 is just too ugly, didnt want a scooby as every cnuts got one so I looked at the gt4, only the st205 version really floated my boat looks wise and i just happened to stumble across new eras website where they were flogging one. It looked great so i bought it.

So here I am, and i'm still loving the whole car thing at the ripe old age of 31. Funny how with most people they grow out of the whole car/boy racer thing, i havent and i cant ever see myself not having a 'toy' to play with and a daily crapheap for going to work in. I guess some people never grow out of it.

As for me... come with me... follow me.... stand by me...... come on.... just a little further... that's it, come this way..... come with me... follow me.... stand by me...... come on.... just a little further...come along now... come with me... follow me.... stand by me...... come on...follow me.... just a little further........ come with me... follow me.... stand by me...... come on.... just a little further.....now, see.....this is the house where I was born. When I was a baby my mother sat me on her knee and said to me: "It's a turbulent world, you must try and bring peace and harmony where ever you go." So I became a waiter.

Well, it's not muh of a philosophy... but.... well fuk you! I can live my life my own way! Fuk you! Fuk off!!

Sorry - no, I always liked motorbikes. When I got them I was jealous as car drivers stayed warm and dry and could carry things more easily.

My dad got a S13 200SX and I was very impressed. I saw the 300ZX about then too. Later I had a 200SX and now a 300ZX.

I still like motorbikes though. I can't see me gowing out of it all either. Everyone has 'something' - drugs, booze, filthy sexual habits, gambling... for me it's cars and bikes (and the others except gambling).

It's not much of a philosophy but... etc

:hyper: :hyper: Saw one loved it, along with a number of other Jap cars and won't one never thought I'd get one. Yipppeee for me I now have one :hyper:

my first motor was a black Nissan Sunny zx coupe(which was cool cos all my mates had mini metros) but a dosey woman wrote it off and she had no licence  , then i had a white one then i chopped it in for a volvo 480turbo which was fookin ace leci everything and quite fast and it had pop up headlights i had that for a couple of years before buying a s13 200sx which was like lightening i felt like a king driving that around, but then i found out that was writen off 2 years before i bought it so i traded that for a pug 309gti which was ok but for some reason we just didnt click so i chopped that in for a Hyundai Scoupe which was suprisingly cool, i put big alloys on it a jap exhuast and it looked ace and while i had that i bought my zed i couldnt believe how cheap they were. id wanted one for years but always thought they were well out of my price range. and i cant be arsed to type anymore.

and breathe

I wanted something sporty, with big engine bay and rear wheel drive, to drop my chevy into. Eventually whittled it down to 300zx or Porsche 928. Z looks great now I've got it but wouldn't mind a go in a 928 just to be sure, before I start the swap.

love at first sight in 1991, to be honest it wouldn't bother me if it had a 1.6 engine, it's still just a beautiful thing to look at. Supras, rx7's and gto's are getting uglier by the day.

my boss at barclays was looking at one so i dug up everything i coudl find on them for him, put in some real research then he buggered off and bought a vx220 instead. About a year and a half later i was looking for a mondeo tdci as a sensible car to buy and drove past the black one, instantly recognised it, it was gorgeous and two days later i'd got the loan money through and went and paid for it with a huge grin on my face :D

Never been so happy as the first drive back with the tbar off on a warm summers night :D

Owned a Honda Civic ESi and loved it for two and a bit years. Never missed a beat and nothing EVER went wrong. So I decided I needed a change and bought a 300zx :D

No seriously, I spent way too much money on the civic as cars are my biggest passion, then when the piston rings went I decided I had spent enough money on it and modifying any more was just throwing money away. The Zed draws so much attention and it's still quite rare, and in my opinion the best value for money/looks/performance. I love Jap cars as well so it was this or a Pulsar GTiR, but the looks of the 300zx swayed it for me

mine would have to say the following:

By accident. I actually wanted a mint S14a but actually finding one for sensible money in my area was like finding a girl called Titanic (goes down first time out). It doesn't happen. One day I was driving past a local garage and saw a beautiful 300 zx on the fore court. I came to this very forum and asked some questions and "Bandit-Uk" (now "The Shorey") answered them for me. I took her for a spin and never looked back! I love 'em!

mine was easy.

A bloke who worked for a mate had his zed vandalised by his ex and the gearbox was knackered he got quotes from expensive places (£350 for a waterpump). I have a computer firm and he wanted a PC so we swapped, the pump cost me £40 from a local spares company and the Autobox was £500 fitted, gave it a re-spray new wheels, disks and calipers and a new rearlight unit.

Oh the zed had done 90000KM and runs sweet as a nut not bad for a £300 PC

i began my obsession with cars after watching the original gone in 60 seconds, since that day i was struck on the American muscle cars. After leaving school i began my apprenticeship as a motor mechanic whilst at collage met a couple of other guys who also shared my love of muscle cars, the Dukes of Hazzard was on TV at the time as well this helped fuel my obsession. I then got my first yank a 71 mach1 mustang with the 351cleveland lump, nothing beats the sound of a V8, the mustang went and in its place came a '69 Plymouth Barracuda with a 360 ci small block, i swapped this for a '71 Dodge Charger with the 440ci big block with the six pack option, then my family came along and the yanks had to be put on the back shelf for a while, a very long while i never got another. Never satisfied with the run of the mill cars i was always looking for something to replace the yanks, then i heard it from behind i heard a rumble it was a z32 in met grey, i had seen em about but not taken much notice until i see this one, "thats it ive found my car, thats the one for me" but way way too expensive at the time, but the love of em stayed with me all these years, i bought a 200sx as needed a cheap car at the time this came along at the right time and price and was my introduction to jap sports cars and was quite impressed with the car, then progressed to the zed and not looked back yet.

Seems to be a natural progression from 200sx to 300zx

At 17 Rover 214s 76BHP

At 18 Ford Sierra XR4x4 150BHP then new cam 170BHP

At 21 Lotus Elan SE 165BHP then put boost to 1bar 225BHP

Now 300zx TT :hyper: :hyper:

mate's got a ZED and i had to have one plus the Elan let the rain in :headvswal

oh and i have an mgb gt in brg for free sitting in a garage in bedford :D

well wen i first passed my test i had a astra mk2 1.4i and then me a my mates converted it wiv a astra gte engine (bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing lol) Then i went and bought and 309gti and managed to get that to a 176bhp and was great it handled like a go-kart and gave these ppl in these clio sports a good run for their money, but it was costing me so much in repairs all the time. At 19 i bought a mx3 v6 and kept in for around 8 months wasnt wot i wanted tbh tho i only needed to put petrol in it,was very reliable as mazdas are? I just turned 20 and seen this 300zx tt in dark grey and gave it a test drive, and had one of the biggest smiles ever and just couldn't get rid of it,i was so amazed by it and fell in love,a week later i handed over a bunch of £20 notes. What i love about them is yes they are a powerfull motor and i have done a tidy few mods to it,but wen your driving along, the ammount of looks you get in them is unreal and if u are behind someone, you can see them all in their mirrors wondering what the hell it is and even wen you drive past them.i love it and there is so much potential in them

sorry bout the lond post ppl lol

and I'm only 24 lol

I wanted a skyline for years and test drove a couple of gts-ts, wasnt that impressed and didnt have enough cash for a gtr. A mate had a z32 but it was a dog, I liked the looks and noise it made so ended up with a "good" one!

I'm now 23 and have a long car history for my age.

1. Mini city E 998cc, had it for 3 years and fully restored it

2. 1974 Mk1 Escort 1300GT in purple! Loved this car but was putting to many miles on it driving to work every day.

3. K series rover metro

I then had a go in an xr2 and was hooked - wanted power! (well if you can call it that)!

4. Blue xr2 - lowered - wicked fun till the mrs crashed it!

5. Grey xr2i - nowhere near as good as an xr2, handeled badly!

6. Metro turbo - Was fun for about 20min till the headgasket went, twice!

7. First child arrived and got a sensible 2 litre laguna and a deawoo for the mrs.

8. the deawoo broke so gave the mrs the laguna and bought a rover 620ti with 200bhp as I missed having something fast!

9. My z, got bored of front wheel drive and understeer!

10. 1.3 fiesta, the z got too expensive to run every day!

I bought 11 cars in 6 years and 10 of them in the last 3!

Hopefully the z will last a bit longer :headvswal
