I have previously been considering buying a manual Zed but after being taken for a spin in Z man's car at the weekend i am coming round to the idea of owning my first automatic.

It seems like the auto box has a number of settings, could someone try to explain to me the different functions and how they actually work and what impact this has.

Are there any manual purists out there who can tempt me back...?

Hi there

I converted my car from Auto to manual a few years back and as I live out in North Wales I must addmit I do love my manual. However if I lived in the South East, the fact its so built up I'd be tempted to go for a fast auto with change at will. This means that you canhave both.

Apparently the Auto box is a weak link on these cars ?

I have to say i dont believe it

However mine blew up a week ago on Sunday :headvswal :xxx:

The settings are pretty basic it has a hold mode which holds a gear for wet or icy conditions etc. when you kick it down hard it automaticly selects Power mode there is a switch near the gear lever which controls these functions.

Im sure someone else will have lots more info ?

Personally i love autobox cause im lazy !!

The Jspec autos don't have a cooler as in Japan they never do the motorway milage and speeds. So the UK driving kills em. Where as Uk auto has the Cooler and mine did 130k before chunk bought it and posted his fastes 1/4 with it. He Didn't bother with a cooler and shortly after it died

When I originally bought mine, 8 or so years ago, I was told that the manual boxes were the weak link and that the autos were much better...

That doesn't seem to be the general concensus, but after owning the car for a while and doing less rush hour M25 commuting, I decided I would do a manual conversion when the the "weak" autobox finally failed. It's still going strong years later! :x:

I gave up waiting and bought a manual conversion kit at the weekend! ;)

I bet thats a UK car as mine was. anyway how goes it Mr Sideways

I was told that stock TT automatic gearboxes do not last long if you are running a higher BHP than stock??

I would prefere a Fast road box with manual change too as long as it can handle plenty of power..:)

The autoboxes are a major weak point, the zed specialist garages tend to replace more autoboxes than anything else ! The UK Oil cooler does assist in reliablity though.

The Manual gearbox on the other hand is one of the strongest out there.

Nissan did a very good job in making the auto perform well in many areas (its actually a couple of tenths quicker in a straight 0-100 run), but in reality the Manuals are a lot quicker (Lighter, More powerfull and less drivetrain friction).

Auto's are easier to come by and cheaper but If you have'nt already test drove a manual, then do so, being able to compare them will let you make a fairer opinion.

No, a j-spec. I put a cooler on the box a couple of years ago, but before that it ran without a cooler for years with no issues.

Things are going very well, ta. It was touch and go for a while when I mentioned in passing to my wife that I'd bought a gearbox, but I survived!

I ran mine at 15 psi for about 5 years. Never a spot of bother.

If your going to run 500+ BHP then they need uprated internals just as the Manual does. All the top standing quater mile cars with big BHP are Auto's

Including the sub 11 second Zeds in the states.

You did the brave thing and slipped it in conversation in a public place where there were not handy bluggening or stabbing implements then.

Well you know the reason my car didn't make the Nurburg run turn out to be a stuck piston in one of the dump valves. If I'd have known it would have taken 40 mins the strip both and grease em. Anyway she's running really well now so you'll be there in you Zedster next year as well?

I have never been happy with the way both of my autos respond to certain driving conidtions with regards to the gearchanges!

Having driving an auto before what do you think on how the Auto boxes handle different driving situations/conditions? Compared to a manual or manually changing gear?

No, I just explained that it was a "bargain"! I also pointed out that as it's my birthday tomorrow and I'd said I'd think of something she could buy me, I'd just done what I said I'd do. ;)

I may well be up for the trip in the Z next year. I'll have to see how it's running and when it is. This year was timed really well for me as I was between phases of a project so I had time off. I think next time I'd want to go from Dover instead of Hull and spend less time away, ideally. It would be better if we could time it so that we're there when the Ring is open for longer each day than it was this time too.

Seven years ago the Zed specialists of the time said exactly the oppersite and if you ask Luke at the Zed centre or Mike Feeney they'll tell you that during the late ninties they repaced more manuals with auto's.

+ the Yanks claim that the standard Auto will handle 600BHP and the manual around 650BHP. However they are talking about new boxes and most manual Zeds i've driven or been in tend to have naff 3rd and 4th gears and thats just from constant use on a relatively moderately tuned car.

You cna get a HKS Gearbox ECU for quick changes so you loose tha laggy change.

Sounds like you have awife who understands the Zed thing. Mine just hates it. Then again she hates anything that means I have fun.

Yep I'm definatly going to have at lease 2 days at the Ring thought some of the other attractions still have there pros.

Do a search on the tool bar for "Change at Will". A guy in the states is selling them at about £300 a kit.

CAUTION: The hkls ALC has damanged several auto boxes here, it keps the line pressure high all the time and has cuased a few guys to have dead boxs. Search ALC and you will be able to read the threads yourself.

SAW (shift at will) seems a better option as it allows you to retain the auto functionality whilst having a paddle shift for the times you want to be in control
