The difference is about 11k and yes they make your engine rev alittle quicker because its not hauling that large weight around on the end of the crank

so which would be the best to go for then?

what do you mean by "11k"

11kg's!!

its mental the weight difference of the oem crank pully to the lightweight ones :)

i have the unorthadox ones and they do look very nice :)

Unorthadox all the way at least you know your getting quality.

The unortherdox ones Smithy sells are the best you can buy. The make is called Unortherdox they are about 11kilograms lighter than the standard pully wheels. OH yes and they look well bling

Hey I got rid of it and then last year on the 12 days it was working and smoking like a bast*rd it was hot like its been all summer and I thought thats going back on and so it has. As you get older you like a bit of comfort.

this is my every day steed. I've decided that I'm going to get a Westfield XTR2 kit and do the twin Hyabusa V8 tubo job. for track days and burning off lardy Zeds

450 BHP with a curb weight of 600 kg

Engine out job to fit these pulleys? Im guessing its not something i could do at home as the cam belt needs doing at the same time?

Dead easy to do when the other belts are off.

You just need a long bar and 27mm socket.

Right, but guessing you need some sort of skill to put the belts back on correctly etc... Maybe a job for someone that knows what they doing and not me lol

Did the pulleys on mine m8, str8 4ward job.

Make sure you get the correct length belts when you reinstall!!

Was loveley and revvy but a little rumblier (hardly noticeable) cos the weight had gone from the end of crank, very well worthwhile mod.

Get hold of an multi size crank puller and also you may have to adjust the keyway a little.

I got a pulley for next to nowt from ebay, dont be fooled into paying tons for a name, they are made from exactly the same stuff, I should know....ex BA test engineer, metallurgy dept, destrucive and non Destructive testing.

Although Unorthodox pulleys are particularly well made a perhaps a tad lighter due to the machine pattern they work to...and they look good too.

If you just want a non bling pulley...their on ebal all the time, I got mine from a guy with a cnc lathe for £14.99.

Good luck

Marc

Just do a search on ebay, I think hes the only one making them afaik.

I'll try and dig out his id

some of you are mixing up KG's and Ibs !! Still a big weight difference though.

Stock is 13 Ibs , Unothordox is 2 Ibs

Dave, My understanding was the Unorthordox pulley was only 9lbs lighter than the stock one.

I was also told that you should see a 2.5bhp increase for every lb you take off the crank. So a very cheap mod indeed.

The main pully wheel alone weighs 13 pounds and the main Unortherdox pully weighs 2 pounds, but the full set off original pullys weighs just over 13 kg and if you change the lot and replace with genuine Unortherdox you'll save almost 13 kg as the complete Unortherdox set weighs about 5 pound in total.

I personally wouldn't go for the cheepo copies on Ebay as the arn't properly balaned and vibrate. This damages your Crank oil seals fooks cam belts and will over time do more serious damage. The genuine Unortherdox are top quality kit and so well balanced that there is no vibration at all. You will need to ajust your iddle speed, but thats it.

U wait til you pull the old pulley off.....jeez its HEAVY.

I think installing an underdrive pulley is a tasty little mod, you will notice the difference :) It seems to make the car really responsive when you rev it.

I certainly made me smile when I took it 4 a spin after the mod, I had so much fun messing around my mate paul (Rainbow TT) did the same mod to his when he fitted a new timing belt.

You know you wanna do it

The timing belt is untouched but the radiator has to come out along with the pipes and cam belt covers to get the pulley puller in there (you can get one from machine mart), getting the radiator out is a fook on with the fan and stuff.

It’s an easy job on a Manual because you can lock up the crank by putting it in 5th gear to stop it turning but not on an auto.

You need a long wrench to get that bolt off because it’s tight (machine mart) with 27mm

Socket.

You also need shorter belts.

4PK890

4PK923

4PK985

I and Marc (MarcZ32) used Gates belts.

Because you don’t touch the timing belt means you can’t go far wrong.

Good Luck

Paul

smithy does complete kits with the shorter belts, got mine from him - top kit :)

unorthodox is even better :) smithy uses the sgp IIRC and i found i had to file the cutout key to get the woodruff to slide over, also the unorthodox has been machine balanced and has drill marks where it has been balanced within spec

although only true way of getting in balanced to your engine is to have it checked with flywheel, crank, pulley with an engineer

Tis true, i sell em both and thanks paul and Legrath :)

Fortunately, the previous 70 odd SGP ones sold to customers ( including at least 2 mechanics) had no fitting issues, hence why am happy to sell em.

As for the ebay ones, man I looked at a Zed today for a mate of mine and you could see the botom pulley wobble, checked the folder of history/receipts and sure enough, ebays best pulley at 21 quid  needless to say it's coming off......

Ebay can be good for some parts, but certain important components just should not be replaced with unbranded/tested products, IMO

Cheers
