20 mins outside and there is 3 or four drips on the floor.

when i put water in the filler, it pours streight out onto the floor is abnormal or is it an overfill safety feature. any ideas?

cant get under the car as i dont have any axle stands, the rad is full of water and the stick shows a touch just above the low mark.

That is pretty much the highest point it can leak from, from what you have said these pipes would be the first point to check, they are a know cause as often neglected on routine servicing but its always difficult to diagnose anything over the net, most often when the water pump goes, with the engine running you can see water being flicked up from the pump as it spins if its that leaking.

When you drain the coolant and refill its very easy to trap air in the system, try to do the work with the front of the car higher than the rear, have the heater on hot while refilling, take your time, leave the car running with the rad cap off and give all the coolant hoses a good squeeze to get rid of all the air.

is the water pump easy to see to check for leaks?

if it was the water pump i presume the car would leak when running which i dont think it does, it just throws out half a pint 2 mins after a 20min drive.

Just dug this up for you from a chap called JeffTT, he used to come on here and help a lot of peope out he works on Zeds all day at his garage ....

Water pump leaks usually show themself in the early stages by leaking after the engine is switched off after a run, often returning to the car after filling with petrol etc. you see a puddle under the car.

If the pump was not circulating due to say of a broken impeller ( seen this once in eight years!) then the engine would overheat in just a few minutes.

As correctly said the two small hoses that sit over the top of the water pump can leak and the leak will run over the pump, however these will always leak when the engine is running so there is the clue to what the problem is.

If in doubt strip and inspect because overheating is the no1 cause of zed engine failures.

Hope that helps

Jeff TT.

aaaaaaaaagggggghhhhh!! looks like the water pump then!!?? :headvswal :) :)

Try and find out when the pump was last changed, and the timing belt for that matter, if its been a while then best to do the lot in one hit, belts, pump and hoses.

manta or bubbles, any idea if the pump has ever been changed?

its only done 54000 miles so i doubt they have been touched, i ill change the hoses ourselves (si)! and if that doesnt work ill have to have the pump and belts changed!

anyone have prices for the hose mentioned in an earlier post and where is a good place for the pump and belts replacing.

Thanks for all the replies, they have really helped

hi, just before i change the hoses thought id see if this can help diagnostics.

15min run, no leak

20 min semi blast, small amount of spashing near cam covers, when i turn engine off it looses about quart to half pint.

as its leaking if i turn engine on the leak stops......for good, i can make it just loose a bit of water instead of half pint by turning engine on and off again.

help from you clever boffs appreciated.

i had this when the turbo coolant hoses got a pinhole leak in them.

the temp was fine when it was running, but if u turned it off after a run, the heatsoak from the turbo caused the hose to spray a bit until the pressure dropped again.

altho this leak was from the back of the engine and ran down the bellhousing and onto the middle rear of the engine bay

Fraser

cheers for that mate, the leak is from somewhere at the front tho, looks like the watter pump or the stubby hoses, just wondering if anyone could explain why i can stop the leak by turning the engine on again for a few seconds.

Like I say dude, take off the fan shroud and do the same test you will see it better!

Also the water pump has a small tell-tale hole,if it's fooked it will leak out of that, again you can see easy if you remove the shroud. :)

nice one manta, thanks for that, you can see the water pump with the fan shroud off?

on the pic in the previous post, where is the pump?

cheeers

paul

if the rad is full of water and its only taking a bit from the res, do you recon i should be driving the car? i suppose the pipe or pump could split and the dodgy stock gauge wouldnt tell me?

also, i cant find mike feeney in traders, im after the stubby pipes, where should i get them from and what should i buy?

cheeers guys

Personally I wouldn't drive it till it's sorted mate-don't want to cook the engine! :wack:

thanks manta, me and si are going to pull it to bits on sunday, i hope its just the pipes........yeah, about driving the car.......I CANT HELP IT, I LOVE IT!!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

twas the metal stubs that the 2 short pipes are attatched to that bolt onto the block!

gettin it sorted now, having the cam and pump changed whilst im at it.

manta, diagnosis correct.

the matrix could be knackered, ive found a bit of water in pass footwell, could it be the wrong coolant?? (markzx)
