Too much work or the right project?

Recently I found a 1990 300zx 2+2, I was told that the car ran while it was at auction but now it will not start and they do not know if it is electrical or fuel problems, the outside of the car has a small softball size dent on the passenger fender but i can pop it out and it will be good to go, its an automatic with the v6 non turbo. The asking price of the car is $1,995 and the car only has 88k miles on it, I was wondering how much work, or if its even possible to drop the twin turbo v6 into this car, how hard it would be to make it a 5 speed, and if anyone could help me out wether I should buy this car or not. You can probably tell that I dont know too much about the aftermarket on this car, nor the engine. I've been around dsm's alot and currently work on a 9 second, 2 world record holding dsm, aka eagle talon tsi awd. another thing id like to know is if there are any aftermarket places to get internals for the twin turbo engine, rods pistons, rings, intake manis, exhaust manis, i just want to build the engine and be able to run the n/a v6 in it now then drop the twin turbo in it later if its possible. to be honest, i dont even know off the top of my head the major difference between the twin and the n/a v6's if they are just different compression pistons set up in the engines but the same block or all together different engines and engine codes. man ive written alot..sorry guys just have alot of questions about this car, i love the looks, the sounds and everything i just dont want another n/a car again..

Over this side of the water most people just buy a TT if they want a TT, NA's aren't that common over here as they were only ever available on import. If you search on 300zxclub.com or Twinturbo.net, you'll probably find a load more info on TTswaps as they love them in the states.

As far as engines go your pretty much right about the only difference being the pistons, its there that the similarities stop. If you want to drop in a TT with turbos you'll need all the piping+ intercoolers, loom, ecu, fuel pump and fuel pump controller unit, gearbox, driveshaft, you'll also need some solenoids and other stuff. The cost of all the parts and labour is usually more that the cost of a complete TT, but if you're doing all the work yourself you may find it economically viable.

If you're looking for bits there are a few places in our Traders forums, but retailers in the states will probably be better for you whe it comes to shipping costs, I think theres plenty of info (as well as buyer/seller ratings) on 300zxclub.com.

Also if you want to try and get that car started take a spare PTU with you and plug it into the car when you get there, that may be the cause of the non-start. (take some contact cleaner and give the ECU temp sensor connector a good scrub as well).

ok, thanks for the reply and for the sites, ill have to check it out

whats a good price for a twin turbo 300zx though? like there is one here, black t top twin turboed with ah crap ill just send the link, tell me if u think its a good deal. http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?car_id=202096778&dealer_id=57872731&car_year=1991&mod_bookmark_id=null&search_type=both&make=NISSAN&distance=100&model=300ZXTURBO&address=26505&certified=&advanced=&max_price=50000&bkms=1149793808620&min_price=1&end_year=2007&start_year=1981&isp=y&lang=&cardist=52

another question i had, is how reliable is the twins, modified or stock are they reliable?

Reliability? the reliability of these cars is proportional to how much TLC you give them, if you religously replace hoses and other wear items as well as change the oil every 5 minutes then the car should never let you down. However after 15 years a lot of these cars have age-related faults and given our ridiculously high underbonnet temeratures a lot of the plastic and rubber things under the bonnet go brittle or perish, also some of the hoses like turbo water feeds are a right bitch to get to and if they ever break your in for a disaster.

When it comes to buying zeds your probably looking at upwards of £4000 over here for a good one, also buying off a forum member is often a good way to find a car thats been looked after. Your best bet is to aquire the services of someone who's an expert in these cars and get them to inspect the car for you, either that or memorise one of the buyers guides you'll find on a few zx sites, like this one:

you guys are awesome with helping me out on this. And depending on the shape of everything, i planned on knit picking this engine apart, replacing basically eveything from water pump to hoses, coolant lines..etc etc If i get this black 300zx i plan on making it my baby and therefore ill get on it but not rip and tear like every other idiot over here with stock honda civics with fart pipes on it, thinking they are fast..its funny cause i just point and laugh

can any of you give me any websites or name brands for aftermarket performance parts for this car? the tt engine that is
