I have just bought one of the above. Nice Samsung CRT HD ready TV 32". The picture is excellent especially on the X Box 360. I have just learned that you can get a DVD called "Avia" to calibrate the High Definition on the Tele. Has anyone ever used such a thing? Next is a HD DVD player.

Featured Replies

yeah dude, very easy to use. essentially its a tool that alows you to calibrate the visual and audio part of your system. Used it in mine as I've had a crt projector in my sytem for a while now , with me laserdiscs , dvd's and now the xbox 360

Doesn't CRT stand for Cathode Ray Tube? I thought they only made HD sets in LCD and Plasma? There is only one true high def DVD player that Toshiba are making but its not released yet and its gonna cost £1000ish. There are quite a few DVD players with HDMI out but they upscale DVDs to HD. They still look stunning though!

get over blu ray, HD DVD is out there now, where is the blueray stuff?

Its waiting in the wings getting ready to own HD DVD when it comes out.

So, is a CRT HD TV (100hz) better than LCD and Plasma? Saw one advertised for about 499 for a 32" slim TV.

CRT HD TV is as good if not better than plasma and LED but obviously not as versatile because even tho its slim it is no where as slim as the others and it would be difficult to hang it on the wall but the picture is spot on. Blue ray or whatever is the technology that the PS3 is going to be using but going by what I have read its going to be a 2 minute wonder?????? Really tho how good can a picture be?

Goodthing about CRT-HD is the refresh rate, you get no motion blur like you do on an LCD.. CRT-HDTV has been out in Japan for years and as the experts say that a Standard CRT TV is still regarded as the best picture for generall TV watching unless your running an LCD or PLASMA in True High Def...

Pro's and cons for LCD vs PLASMA... LCD is generally a sharper clearer image and the best choice for Day to Day T.V watching..

Plasma is better for movies and Video games though as they don't tend to suffer with the refresh rate problems that some LCD's do. Decent Plasmas like the Panasonic's and Pioneers of this world offer deeper blacks and brighter whites.. Always look for one with the highest Contrast ratio eg 5000:1 or even better 10000:1. and a minimum Resolution of 1024 x 768

Draw back of Plasmas is they can suffer from screen burn if an image is on the screen for too long... eg the TMF chanel on SKY / Freeview (Seen so many Plasmas with this logo burnt into them!)

HD-DVD vs blu ray

HD-DVD Pro's it's available now and offers the best highdef picture quality

Cheap to produce the HD-DVD Players

Con's Although increased data capacity your still very limited and as a higher percentage rate of going tits like betamax did...

bluray pro's

Massive storage capacity 50GB on a single dual layer disc,

All the major film companys are backing it already and also most of the Big Japanies electronics Companies

PS3 gonna have it which means it's gonna be the cheapest bluray player on the market as well as being a games console

Ability to load multiple data streams at once and ultra fast loading times due to multiple laser split reading technology. i.e watch two or more porn films simultainiously at once from the same disc!

Con's (Expensive in all areas, cost of discs and Players but apparently worth it!)

Not out till at least September in this country so likelyhood is PS3 will be the first to feature it.

Standard blueray Players are rumoured to start at around £600 when realesed in the UK unitil Matsui or Proline start producing them!!

Bloody hell John, I was going to buy a 50"+ plasma this year I dont fancy having the Sky logo burnt into the screen  :wack:

You'll be ok dude, the problem with the TMF chanel is the logo is in thick bright white lettering and is normally still present when the adverts come on, this is what tends to kill them because it's using the brightest white electro charge gas cell's to make up the logo...

We've killed a few in our shop just by leaving them on that channel all day about 11Hours continuous use.. Just keep channel surfing every few hours and you'll be ok!!!

1024x768 is not HD, minimum HD res is 1280x720, which quite obviously aint gonna fit into a 1024x768 screen without losing out on horizontal resolution. These screens are crap tbh.

1024x768 isn't true HD, it is the absolute MINIMUM standard. This is because it can display 720p (1024x720lines progressively scanned). This will be the favoured format for sports and fast moving programmes. For this reason I wouldn't touch a Panasonic plasma because it only got the minimum standard.

Sony and Philips at least get near the 1080i (1920x1080 lines interlaced) as most have 1366x768 pixels and the picture is sooo much better than the Panasonic. Look for this as a minimum standard.

If you want true HD Philips do a 37" LCD that has the full 1920x1080 that you can pick up for about £2200. BUY THIS IF YOU WANT TRUE HD!! Toshiba do one too but its how do I say,.... err TOSH!

I think you'll find it is HD but there are many resolutions that make up and class themselves as HD!! Hence the terms 1080i (iNTERLACED) which SKY HD runs at (Max Res) and 1080p pROGRESIVE which is what most blu ray movies will be shown at...

There are many HD sets out there that start at the LOWEST resolution of 852 x 480

Most HD tv's on the market you'll find have a Horizontal resolution of 1366 x 768 just to give that little bit of Xtra Definition. Since Sky HD's max output res is 1080 x 720i then as long as you purchase a flat panel TV with 1280 or above you'll be ok!

Yeah, and there is a new Ambilight 4 version out soon for extra grooveyness and also features Pixel Plus 5

The Tosh actually got 5 out of 5 in T3 Mag and What Video & TV magazine but Toshiba's after care service is poo... :xxx:

have to say agree to a certain extent. If you look at resolutions on certain screens, this generally only tells you so much. The best screen on the market at the momemt are the Pioneer (IMHO) range of screens - all running at 1024 * 768 , so dont let that put you off panasonics either. As for the philips pixel plus screen. Yeah on paper better, in practice not..

There is no such resolution as 1080 x 720i. 1080i means 1920x1080 lines interlaced. TRUE HD refers to 1920x1080p which literally only a few TV's can display.

We have Sony, Philips and Panasonics running on HD in our showroom and the Panasonic is no where near up to the others as it can only display 1024x768p.

852 x 480 is no where near HD. Thats less than ordinary TV pictures! (576 lines)

Sorry Pete, actually meant 1080i max output for sky :mac1:
