one for the sparkies/I.T. guys on here.

* bought a new PC a few weeks ago. nae problems with it except graphics card is a major let down (ATI X550)

* bought a new graphics card (ATI X850) which requires extra power feed from power supply unit. fitted. nae problems. flying (except the occasional beep while playing graphics-intensive game, dont know whether its cos im holding a direction key down for a while or whether its from new card.) otherwise no problems

* try to run new pc from 4-way power point so its mated with new LCD monitor, printer etc. but that tripped the fuse box downstairs.

* run PC from its own power point and its fine. nae problems.

* our area had a power surge a few days ago (not my fault i was at work!)

* used PC. nae problems.

* couple of days ago the PC trips downstairs out again :confused: for no apparent reason.

* reset trip. happens again. :confused: take side of PC off, check all connections/cards etc. everything ok.

* the only thing i can remember installing is a USB cable with a green LED light! unplug that, and it works! plug it in while its running... and it still works...

* reset trip. plug my old PC back in (same socket, same lead). runs fine.

* plug new PC back in. trips out.

* unplug DVD drive and gfx card so ease load off PC PSU. switch on. works fine (except i cant see anything cos gfx card got no power!)

* put OLD graphics card in, plug DVD player back in (this works fine too). TRIPS OUT! :confused: so new gfx card not to blame!

* put NEW graphics card in, but leave couple of other things unplugged. works fine! :confused: :confused:

* swap trip plug downstairs with the one next to it (same rating :D ) to elimiate that (maybe local power surge weakened it or sommat)

* put old harddrive in, in place of DVD player (so i can copy some files across quickly). works fine, but then when i switch on again after a while (made no changes), trips out!

* but now while im typing this, i have new gfx card in, 3 hdd drives plugged in, and it works ok.

its so intermittent its bizarre! when its on, it STAYS on, but when it trips, it happens literally when I flick the switch to turn it on. its sure not the gfx card, nor anything else inside the pc (they all work individually). the PC's PSU is rated 350W, 220-240V. ive narrowed it down to the following:

* PC PSU is a little faulty and works intermittently (in which case, remove porn and take back to PC World)

* the PC, being quite powerful, is running close to its load limit so that sometimes it will cause a trip, sometimes it wont (upgrade trip to higher load :x: :x: or make do with no hard drive :( )

* the local surge has boogered something up (remember i did have a trip before the surge but that was when i ran it off a 4-way)

* the bloody thing's cursed (take to church and bless with holy water)

any ideas whats wrong cos its doin me bone in!

first thing is first get a bigger PSU, 350w is no where near enough to run the PC properly

get a ANTEC, for me they are THE best money can buy, i have a 480W, NEVER had a prob. built a SLI 7800GT system for my dad running an ANTEC 500W PSU, again no problems

that would be my port of call m8

if the PSU is a QTEC then bin it ASAP, they are aweful PSU's, 1 that went bang took out a m8's GFX card, motherboard and chip.

hope this helps :)

...and one last piece of advice..get a surge protector on...I have a good 8 way that I got after a power outage cost me dealy.

its a Delta Electronics one that came with the PC. but why would a weak PSU cause my electric box to trip out?

word to the surge protector, they are incredibly useful.

sounds more like it's your wiring around the house (or something else) rather than the pc dude.

If your PSU is too weak, it could be that your PC is trying to draw too much. I suppose it would then depend on your electrics as to whether or not the box trips. My box trips if I have a bulb go in the house...don't ask me about the reasons tho as it was ages ago I did electrics...lol

I agree with all others, and remeber your GPU (graphics card) need a clean line from the PSU the Antec has a line marked for this with an adaptor

Cheapo PSU power ratings are like cheapo stereos - the quoted watage is not true RMS watage and only for like 15 seconds. Ive been through lots of cheapo 500W PSU's and then i got an Antec one and since i aint had a problem. At least a good PSU is more future proof than things like CPU's or gfx cards.

you seem to know your stuff so why do you say a GPU is the same as a graphics card when its not? thats like saying your processor's cache is the same as the processor?!

When we in the trade talk about computer parts we usually call them by the main component or Shorten it.

GPU = Graphical Processing unit

CPU = Centeral Processing unit

PSU = Power supply Unit

MOBO = Motherboard

MEM = Memory

STFU = What was the point in your post LOL

alright, no need to get shirty.

first off, it's graphics processing unit

secondly, that ain't the same as a graphics CARD

so, your sentence just wasn't right. not being pernickety or hating, just saying :)

:rofl: :rofl: I wasn't the one being anal about things, chill out this is a car forum FFS :slap:

What do you do for a living?

i'm a web designer...you?

MD of a computer firm (hardware specialist (high end PC's) and network we also manf PC's for GOV contracts) I am a Electrical and Electronic Engineer used to do Integrated system control (PLC and ROBOTICS) B4 motorbike crash.

Do you work for yourself? If so I could put work your way I am always getting asked about websites (I am hardware not software) and our web bloke is the other side of the country (we do hosting though).

If you look at my last posts you will see that im taking the piss an not trying to offend :) and I don't like to go around trying to make ppl look stupid, unlike some ppl.

And a GPU is intact a Graphical Processing unit but is also known as a Graphics Processing unit (mostly in America)

Oh and if the cache is part of the CPU architecture, it's part of it.

Ohhhh! A computer nerd fight!!! Let me join in!!!!!

ok guys :D so here i am on fleabay looking for a more powerful PSU (that's power supply unit to Woody and Vigilante ;) ). i dont want to splash out on some fancy-pants high-end one, just one that'll cope nicely with my PC (personal computer)'s power requirements.

question - what things do i need to look for to make sure that i can supply my motherboard with everything it needs? i think mine is ATX. will 350/380W be enough?

You need to look at the true power of PSU's. Most cheap ones that claim to be 500W are not at all. A true 280W PSU will cope with most home pc's needs.

eg. My home pc has a 550W PSU. its actual output is only 285w peak. So you need to know the Actual specs of what your buying.

Your best to spend a little more on a good named true power then a cheap 450-500w one.

And by "true power" I dont mean the Brand name.

Not looked at PSU's for a bit so cant give you a good name to go for. Sure one of the guys on here can shed more light on the good ones that are out at the mo.

Indeed. I have a Compaq Proliant DL580 server in the loft that has 4 x Xeon processor - 4 hard drives, 16 memory DIMM's- two power supplies and is really good at heating my house! And its PSU is rated at 260W!

Buy a cheapo '500W' PSU for £30 and it might wreck your hard disks from voltage drops - ive seen it happen to a mates PC.

another option, would be to use another psu as well, and old one from any pc. i have 2 650W psu on my pc, to power my raid.

if you got an old pc to butcher drop me a line and ill tell you how to do it, saves buying new parts

deleted ............ should have read all your post first :o

lol, actually you offered a good bit of advice there mate - take the PC round to a mate's and see if it trips his leccy or not. unfortuantely i wont have the opportunity to do this for a few days but here's hoping!

Yep got your PM, oh main brand PC's tend to use cheep components so you are probably right with a knackered Power Supply.

ok check this out. not had a problem with the PC recently (touch wood), as long as i switch it on/off at the back off the unit as well as at the plug. there's a USB cable which i use to connect to my printer (one of those with a normal USB connection at one end and a smaller squarer one at the other) that has a green neon light at one end :smw:

although it works fine while the PC is on, if i leave this plugged in while i switch on the PC it causes a trip!!! :confused: unplug it and retry, and its fine! :confused:

cant believe ive narrowed this problem down to a USB cable!!?!??
