I fitted a short shifter to my old rover 620ti and it made a huge difference to the general driving experience. I'm looking to do the same with my z and I'm gonna buy a short shift kit pretty soon. When I got the one for the rover I was quoted 20min fitting time and it took me well over 2 hours! Exhaust and gear linkage all had to come off! (Was well worth it tho).

Has anyone fitted such a kit to their z? How long did it take and I take it its all gonna have to be done from underneith? My Z is a little more difficult to get under than a rover!

There are 2 short shift kits for the 300zx on ebay at the mo, one cheaper one at £27.95 start and one at £45 buy it now, the more expensive one is listed as JDM, fully chromed and comes with a new gear knob so I might pay the extra and get that one unless anyone knows any better?

Thanks, Ed

yeah on the rover the shifter itself goes in from the bottom and you have to move the exhaust to get at it.

On the z kit you get the round plate part that looks like its holds the shifter in place from above (with the two 10mm looking hols for bolts).

The auction states that they dont come with any insructions so i though i would ask on here first.

If this is the case and its just held on by a couple of bolts from the top then should be easy and ill buy one in a min!

PS. Does the center console have to come off or can you get at it without dismantaling it.

got one on mine, and after a lot of discussion about gear box strengths there was a question of would a short shift possibly be causing problems with the gears as mine grinds going into 4th. not quite sure if anyone decided if this could be a factor but could be worth considering?

should not grind in any gear,

i fitted one on my rover (different I know) but it was well worth it made a big difference to the overall feel of the car - i can always put the oem one back if i have probs

I don't know much about these kits but I "thought" that all they really do is reduce the distance you need to move the gearstick, therefore speeding up the gear change. I also "thought" that they don't improve the longevity of the box.

Could you not just cut a couple of inches off your gearstick?

That would mean you don't have to move it so far! LOL

it certainly shouldnt your right, however mine does, but wether having a short shift has anything to do with that or not i dont know, i cant imagine it helps. would be interested to see what other people think

LOL! LOL!

Its a bit more scientific than that!!!

The fulcrum or pivot point is altered so the top part moves thru less distance but the part below the pivot point still travels the same distance only it does so in less time.

The traditional down side is of course the additional effort required to shift due to the reduced leverage ratio.

In general there is a lot ot nonsense written about these kits and also a lack of understanding of the principles involved.

i hope the above makes sense to you.

Given the above info It is then obvious (to me anyway) that fitting a quickshift kit to a box in good working order will not damage it in any way.

However...... fitting one to a box with weak/worn syncros may highlight the problem as the increased speed of shift may start to beat the (already) worn syncro hubs.

My quick shift kit came today. Its much better quality than I expected and only paid 30 quid for it!

One question before i start taking my car appart. In my earlier posts I asked if you needed to go under the car to fit it. Krsmayo says he did it all from the top. The kit came with instructions which say that the shifter is held down with 6 bolts, the front two of which have to be accessed from under the car!

Is this true?!
