I bought a laptop a few months ago and the free Norton has run out today.

What's the best anti-virus software I can get?

Are there any free ones that are good?

Cheers!

yep, AVAST Home is pretty good. http://WWW.avast.com...

AVG is also ok but I prefer Avast.

Try the link above. It is free to download and is fairly good as far as I know.

Just click on the download button at the top right and save it to your disk or just run it direct.

God Luck with it.

Yep AVG is best for home user. Norton AV is a bit crap and like a lot of the big name ones it can suck up system resources, Norton can use around 40MB in total which is nuts.

yeh i used to think norton was alright but its now all about kapersky in my mind. the reviews on that linked page above should settle any disputes :D

i use AVG and AVAST together. unusually they run quite well in tandam and both have picked up things the other had missed.

THanks chaps - lots of good advice there.

I've downloaded AVG as a) most people recommended it and b) AndyP broadly speaking seems to know the answer to most questions.

I take it I can remove Norton with the 'remove programme' function now?

Cheers!

LOL - Thanks - if only that were true ! ;)

And yeah, kill Norton before it kills you !

If you're lucky i've had a few installations where it won't flippin uninstall :(

You'll be lucky if you can remove all of the Norton software, as some of it is imbedded in other programs, I have other Anti Software installed and just disable Norton and everything works OK

Also Norton Systemworks is hand of satan. Jo average installs it on their PC, systemworks plungs its evil tentacles into all the networking and other stuff and lo you often end up with an unusable PC.

AVG antivirus, Adaware spyware checker, Run windows update once a week - is the easiest way to keep your pc tip top.
