i think 8mb broadband is only available in certain areas if youre on BT or Wanadoo. im with Wanadoo (2.2mb) and they reckon 8mb will be almost everywhere around September time.

i just checked the availabilty of my area and BT says i should get 6.5 meg so 1.9meg seems low and i'm paying for 8meg too

Mine's supposed to be a Pipex 2mB link but tests at 1mB.

You never get the full 'theoretical' speed though. I think it's all to do with contention and distance to the exchange.

If you were the only person on the ADSL link and lived next door to the exchange you may get near the full speed.

Try setting it to

other: T1 or HDSL

it wont do the test it says to low or to high. will have to ring me thinks

that ispconnect tester is crap, said i was getting 3.3mbps when im on a 2mb line.

Every ADSL user will shortly be upgraded to MaxDSL, a technology in which your modem will sync at the maximum speed possible on your line, which can be anything from 165kbps to 8mbps.

However, just because your modem sync's at that speed doesnt mean your ISP will allow throughput at that speed. Its a common technique from the 'old' style ADSL, where the ISP had to pay BT for a line regrade, they would tell them to regrade the line to the highest speed possible, usually 2mb, that way if a user ordered 1mb then in the future they could upgrade to 2mb without another regrade, the isp just sets the speed limit up.

Anyway dipone, your service will be 'up to 8mb', not 8mb. What speed is your router sync'd at, you can find out from its configuration interface. Sounds like 2mb to me, you may find that in the not so distant future your line will be switched to maxDSL and your speed may well increase.

well works fine for me  :D

both are wrong, lol i have a 10mb cable connection and the first one says 1.1mbs :x: and the second says 4.85mbs

i've looked at loads of these tests before and found they all suck, yet downloading from microsoft.com i have reached speeds of 1400kb steady

Hi Dipone,

Your router will only resync at a higher speed once you reset it. Bear in mind, that even if your line can support close to 8Mb, it'll only step up slowly (after every resync). So you may find resetting once a day for a few days will provide you with your optimum speed.

Hope this helps

Simon.

Are you able to see your actual connection speed and have you actually upgraded to an 8meg service?

8meg broadband is available everywhere from many SP's via BT now, but you'll need to request the new service to get regraded, some charge more for it so watch out.

And assuming you have been moved to the 8meg service and you are getting a healthy connection speed, it can take a day or two for the systems to settle down and set the network up correctly (as it monitors and adjusts according to your line characteristics).

Also it depends on how the speed of the line is being tested, because there is a difference between connection speed and service throughput affected by many factors.
