Hi All. OK, brief spec. XP pro. 3000+amd, 1gb ram, Radeon 9800 pro, New PC chips mobo, new Seagate HD.

Fresh install of XP (Twice)...

Problem, sometimes, about once a day the mouse will not work, switch off and re start and sometimes its OK. Leave it and sometimes its OK, sometimes not.

New Cordless mouse and kbyd, (M/soft) makes no difference, corded mouse and kebyd jsut the same.

Try it in a different USB port and mostly its OK, it often "finds" the mouse and we are off.... untill the next time.

New Mobo was installed to fix this problem, ha ha. But its still there.

Driving me nuts.

Any ideas?

Have you disabled the power saving on the USB ports? This can be a pain as the PC switches them off to save power by default...

ERRRRR.... PC Chips, Why pick THE worst Mobo manf out there You should have gone for an ASUS, A-BIT or MSI, and if budget a AsROCK, FOXCON, ECS

The only place i've fitted a PC-chips MOBO is in a SKIP. Get a decent MOBO.

Oh have you got a Lexark Printer? If so unplug it from the USB and try it then. (they also suck)

 Nothing wrong with PCchips MOBO's provided you know what your doing and install them correctly.

What PSU (Power supply unit) you got fitted? As stated you might have XP set to disable USB to save power and if your PSU is not up to the job could have a problem there.

If this was going on before the MOBO upgrade i would be looking at things other then MOBO.

PSU or XP power save is my bet. :duffer:

im with him ^ ! no point in bigging up your insane mobo knowledge when the problem was there before.

its a small point, and unlikely (but still a chance all the same), but do the keyboard/mouse use PS2 ports into a usb adaptor? maybe the adaptor is dodgy...

although it would be nice for it to be the power saving, i doubt it if you don't have problems with other USB devices. have you only used one keyboard/mouse or two? wasn't sure from your post.

it might just be dodgy peripherals!

? Didn't he say that he done a fresh install, so the powersave wouldnt be a prob, and also PSU would cause other problems not just USB,

What Mobo Model is it, as there are so many PC-Chips mobos out there with different known problems, a bios update might be the answer.

If you defend PC-Chips and other poor quality budget components you must be using them in PC's you sell, shame on you but a nice way to keep the customers coming back :x:

Anyway this doesn't solve the problem, what else have you got plugged into the USB's eg...are you using a hub and is it powered? Try and unplug everything from the USB and leave the KB and mouse plugged in, then plug each device in one at a time, I have heard some USB problems caused by ADSL modems, but never come across it myself. See how you go without knowing the exact model of the stuff it's hard to say what's wrong with the PC, the other option it to take it to someone you know and trust and knows about PC's not thinks they know keep clear of fiddlers, who will automatically change everything to equipment they know (or want a profit on)

Sorry for the rant but there as so many Idiots doing stuff with PC's and charging for it, the amount of computers that come in here from other firms is unreal and 99% of the time they are just not configured correctly, but the worst are the firms that use the “PRO” mobos with the CPU “welded in”. Also a lot of PC's have insufficient cooling as in only a CPU fan nothing else they should be lined up and shot.

Have you run Spy/Malware checks?

That's the first thing I'd suspect, particularly if the pc takes a long time to boot.

Spy-Bot, AdAware, SpySweeper and Ewido.

I assume that you have anti-virus software - AVG7 is excellent and free.

Beware of WinFixer, never click on it.

Powersave is set as default on a win XP install so will still be there after a new install. If its a minimal pc install there is no reason that it wouldn't be the PSU and that USB is being knocked out by it and not giving any other residual effects.

Yup, same as ALL mobo's, worth a go.

I dont sell pc's :nelson: but know enough about pc hardware to know pcchips are an ok budget supplyer of mobo's. :duffer:

Thanks guys, I did write a long answer to all your replies and guess what, the mouse froze.

Anyway, the problem is the same with 2 differerent mobos. The power supply is one constant that I had not considered as ity is not too old. It is big enough. I have tried both USB and PS2 connections, in all USB slots direct into the mobo and via a powered hub. All the same. Tried 3 different mice, one brand new cordless microsoft. Have not tried powersave option, and I will do and report back. Current mobo is a K7.

Greatly appreciate your effort, thanks.

right click My Computer, select Properties. Select Hardware, then Device Manager.

Go down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and expand it. Double click the USB Root Hub option then go to Power Saving along the top. Deselect the option that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

OK, did the USB powersave thing. No Good. It froze today exactly when I inserted a cd to load a program, as in the tray slid in, I watched to see if the light on the front of the cd drive was working as I didnt see the expected autorun symbol, and then it froze.

Restarted and it was fine. Does this point at power supply???? Dont why it might as when everthing is OK its all OK, if you know what I mean....also kebd froze too. As usual.

Not PSU. Have you got any errors in device manager? Have you got any errors in the event logs. both system and app?

You have installed the motherboard drivers?

Go into device manager and see if you have any yellow question marks.

Damn it I wasnt going to post anymore.

Device Manager is all OK, had a quick look for event logs but am lost. I inserted another cd to load today and watched very carefully.

This is what happened. Tray went in, light on drive flashed and then stopped. No Autorun. Mouse and kebd froze. reset and its OK.

Thanks for your help so far Angus.

And thanks to you also Woody, Yes I have installed the mobo drivers. Although I make no claim at being good at PC's I am OK (ish).

Thing is, this very same problem is exactly the same with 2 different motherboards, 2 different hard drives, including 2 fresh XP installs and one "repair" install, 3 different sets of mouse/keyboard both USB and PS2 fitting (Is it PS2?).....Common factors. CPU, Ram, Case and power supply, Video card (AGP radeon 9800 Pro), cd writer, DVD rive, floppy (which I never use).

When it freezes it just stops responding to inputs. No other sign of a problem, that I can see.

IRQ. Almost definately. Go to system information(all programs, accesories, system tools)click on hardware resources, then conflicts/sharing. Difficult to say what it will look like for you, but look for something "mousey" ;-). If theres a conflict in there, try disabling the other thing(unless its GFX, Bus or other MOBO related). Reboot. Also, try looking in the IRQ section, and looking for clashes with mouse/USB. Maybe take some screenshots and post em?

Also worth looking in the Event Viewer. Mostly crap in there, but sometimes records something usefull... is in control panel, administrative tools. Look for anything with a red circle with an X in it.

Go into Bios and the part for Plug and Play OS make sure it's yes or enabled, it could be under hardware adress ctrl put it as OS, don't confused with OS2 (this is the IBM operatin system), It does sound like a IRQ.

It's a lot easyer fault finding when the PC is sitting in front of you, everyone here will agree to this.
