if its an auto, the bmw auto is as shite as a nissan auto. watch for bad idle as it could be bore ware

Big and heavy, no comparison to zed performance, more of a big cruiser.

I like the 8 series, but generally they always got bad press.... becuase it was the wrong car(meant as a 6 series replacement, but never lived up to it) launched at the wrong time (big engine at a time when europe was in an economic decline).

I know a lot about them as used to have access to one. IMHO they are crap. Unreliable, thirsty, slow and the handling is kak. The 800 series was the biggest flop for BMW. They started with the 850i, a V12 version. The block had design faults as cracks began to appear. So to save face they bought out the 840i and it still proved to be a waste of time.

im sure it will be fun to take out anyway, not seriously looking to change my car but seen it advertised and thought why not have a look. do quite fancy the sound of the 850 v12 tho

They are high maintenance for little return compared to other tourers & sports. A gearbox replacement is £4000 on an exchange basis and this is from a specialist and not main dealer. A throttle actuator from main dealer £900, from third party, £700. They are also prone to fast steering rake deteoration as the design of the engine, weight distribution and front suspension was another design fault. STAY AWAY !

Just looked up a 0-60 on one and it was 6.2, so they aint slow.

Still, not very good cars from what's been said above - another of my childhood desire cars though, like the Zed... :)

i know what you mean! i followed one the other day, looked very nice so looked on autotrader and found one 7miles away!

Very pimping indeed!

I'd love to have a go in one, but if the auto box is as dodgy as one on a Zed, £4000 is a bit hefty!!

Maybe have one as a third car and only drive it for 10 miles once a month... :)

Zed autoboxes aren't dodgy, anyone who has driven other autos will know they're excellent performance-wise. Reliability-wise... people service zeds badly, modify them and don't uprate cooling etc and they complain when things break  and then post on here saying they're crap. :wack:

i wouldnt go as far to say bmw autoboxes are as bad as nissan,i know a few bmw 5series with 200k + on the clock and the autobox still works ok,i doubt a 300 auto could do that

Well, that's kind of re-assuring, I was only going on what I'd read on here so far - only had my Zed two weeks and I'm already nervous that the auto box might be ready to blow! I'm going fit an uprated cooler ASAP and mine is stock so hopefully it will be OK.

By-the-way Pete, is the group buy grounding kit offer/thingy still going? Might be my first minor mod...

Christian

Yeah, mine's been in the UK for 4 years now and I don't think it has one. I suppose not everyone who gets a Zed gets all the amazing advice that's available from this website, it should be the law for a Zed owner. (to the club in general)

i suppose its not something you would even think about if it wasnt for places like these...invaluable advice

Engine wise the 850 is the same as the 750 only the early ones suffered from the nikasil problem and if it's got over 100k on the clock it's either had a new engine or it's safe to say it'll go on for another 100k. If the idle is not silky smooth walk away, you should be able to stand a pound coin on its side on the engine and it will not fall over even if you rev it a bit. Steering boxes and all the linkages are another thing to watch out for, the steering box alone is over £1000. And make sure everything electrical works too.
