Engine Update

Hi ya all

Finally got the report from the garage, engine is knackered(as if I didn't already know). They have told me it would be in the region of £4000-£5000 for a full strip and rebuild, as nearly all the engine if f*****d, so my only choise has to be a second hand engine, so the car is booked in for next week, hopefully be back to me in around 7 days.

I know this is not the cheapest option but as my only car I can't afford it to be off the road for a few months, first finding a place to rebuild and then the rebuild itself.

I'll let you know how it goes and if it goes pear shaped you can me 'I told you so' afterwards. wink.gif

Regards

JOHN

Sorry to hear that John.

£4-£5k would get you a completely new engine from Nissan.

Have they told you what went wrong?

Also, are you summarising when you use the term 'knackered' or is that what the garage have told you?

A second hand engine should be around £1500 and £500 to fit! Who will be fitting the engine for you?

Steve

Yeah I was summarising, they did tell me the whole sad story but not being to strong around engines, I forgot most of it, I'll take a notebook next tine biggrin.gif but it did need all new values, pistons etc. to be honest I don't think he wanted the job, but that's his problem.

I'm using API Engines in the Midlands, they can turn the car around in about 7 days and they can pick up and deliver the car to me, which for me is essential. They may not be the cheapest but hey it's only money, I wish I had the time to look more to be honest this was really my only option.

JOHN

Sounds like a snapped cambelt to me! Just out of curiosity John, when did you last get the car serviced??? I'm not trying to say this is anyones fault - just wanting to know how many miles the cambelt had on it...

CheerZ,

Andy

Sorry to hear about this John mate, read the original thread!

As Steve pointed out new engine from Nelson at 4.5K which is what BOB FORD at PETERBOROUGH NELSON(ARRIVA) quoted me. If it happens to me again I'm gonna go the new engine route and try and barter for more discount!

I heard somewhere that Nick(Nico) paid 7K for a new lump a while back so 4.5K is getting more realistic.

John just one word of advice from me being non-tech orientated also...don't believe everything you're told where the engine is concerned! I was told that mine was well and truly Phuket when all it needed was a top end build.

Which consists of head work mostly and valves/seats etc.

If they are quoting you 4.5K's worth I would say stuff that, new lump! But if it is as bad as they say then go for a recon but get a compression test done first. wink.gif

Gutted for ya matey! Especially after you'd pumped enough into getting the look of the car so nice. mad.gif

Chin up mate!

I know nothing about API and they may well be top blokes etc, but I am surprised they can turn up a "good" Zed motor in a couple of days ... I would be kinda concerned that you're gonna get the first that turns up in a scrappy which could be an import auto motor with no known history etc etc. If they know little about Zeds, then you (or someone) may need to educate them on what will or won't work right.

Jeez, this is a stack of cash we're talking about here. I'd be tempted to go buy a £500 quid runabout for a month or two while you get the right place to do a good job that will last you for years, rather than £5K which could expire in 6 months.

Cheers Guys

Andy, the car was serviced in Nov and had a cambelt change in July so there less than 10000 miles on the belt.

Timmy, the engine I'm getting has about 30000 miles on the clock, it has been fully stripped, gaskets and seals changed etc, also new cambelt, water pump and thermostat, the whole system is then hooked up and run at 5000rpm for 45 mins to look for leaks etc, thenm it's fully tested again, compression test included. It's then put on the car, sorted out, tested, then road tested, checked for leaks etc. only then are they going to deliver it back to me, I go out test it, if I'm happy I pay.

There's a 12 month 12000 miles warranty on the engine so if it goes pants up, it can be sorted.

Cheers for the support it great to be able to come here for advise.

JOHN

Oh OK mate, so you meant 1500 squid for a recon then? Checked out etc. as you said?

Cool for that money matey, go with it! wink.gif

Cheerz John - thats not much miles for a cambelt really. Completely thrashing about in the dark here but is it not worth finding out what warranty there is on the work done in the service??? Even if they only pay a proportion it would be worth it wink.gif That is of course if it WAS the cambelt that had gone, which I'm guessing!

CheerZ,

Andy

Thanks for the detail John, feel much better about it now !

Thanks for the detail John, feel much better about it now !

i wouldnt hold your breath about claiming for a duff cam belt, a bloke i work with has his bmw serviced ,by bmw, then a few months later the cambelt went. he tried to claim, blaming them for a dodgy belt, or the fact that they had not changed it at all. anyways he got nowhere fast

Thanks for the detail John, feel much better about it now !

Mr. P!!! It's you who keeps killing the forum...LOL biggrin.gif

I tried to get on before but it was running like a bad dog. Mind you, doesn't say much for the software if 1 user posts multiples and it all grinds to a halt! LMFAO biggrin.gif

Craig, told yer so mate! PERL is yer problem but you think it's hardware??? OK bud! wink.gif

Timmy

I'm paying £2000 for the recon engine, plus ther other bits, fitting and delivery and collection all of course + VAT, bain of my fucking life VAT. Great.

I think it should be good, well I bloody hope so, going to have to wait till next year now for my new leather interior frown.gif

Andy

Garage said the cambelt was ok so i really don't know, wish it had been and then like you said maybe I could have claimed, BTW it was a different garage to the one that did the engine inspection.

JOHN

happier know his Z is being fixed smile.gif

Hi John,

you say the Garage who is sorting you out with a seond hand engine is in the Midlands?

Can you give us their web address or phone number?...I think we are a bit short of Midlands based garages ehre

Thanks

The garage is API Engines, 01926 614333 speak to simon about engines, he knows his stuff, I'd give you the web address but i forgot it.

JOHN

if the pistons have hit the valves ether the con rod has snaped which is highly un likly or the cam belt has snapped which sounds like it to me so i would say hes not telling you some thing and trying to get mony out of you thats my analysise if i could spell it any way

Toger13

The mechanic that's done the report isn't the same guy who fitted the belt or who is fitting the engine, he's done work for me before, but he doesn't want this job as it's too much for him too do and at his prices I have to agree, also cambelt def. has not snapped! I will get the report from him and post it on the forum as soon as I have time.

Kind Regards

JOHN
