February 22, 200224 yr Hi Andy, How you doing mate? As someone who works with Jeff on practically a daily basis (both for ZedWorld and other business)I'd like to take this time to clarify a few things without (hopefully) offending anyone or starting an argument - defo not my intention. The reason this forum is so valuable is because of all the people who offer advice and help other folks out. Jeff is no exception to that. He frequently offers very valuable advice on this forum, just like everyone else. However, the difference is that Jeff is very knowledgeable when it comes to Zeds and as an "enthusiast" (not a dealer) is willing to work on these cars. If someone has a problem they can ask for advice on the forum. If they want a professional opinion on something they can either take the car to Nissan and be ripped off or take it to a specialist, like Jeff. He then has to take time out of his core business (which has nothing to do with cars), time during which he could be earning money. To compensate for his time spent away from his core business he quotes a fee to the customer. Believe you me, as someone who does work with him a lot, he's not making any money off any one. All he wants is fair compensation for time spent away from his core business and income generator. I don't think that this is unfair. So at the end of the day everyone knows where he/she stands: excellent free advice on the forum and personal expert advice at a fee. Again, I'm not looking to start an argument here or offend anyone so please take it in that spirit. I'm merely trying to explain the logic behind it all. Cheers mate Danny PS - hope to see you at the Easter Meet in Solihull - Midlands.
February 22, 200224 yr OK, I've read what both of you say and there is a difference between what you are talking about (or it seems that way to me). Andy is inferring that if someone asks for help on the forum, and the "enthusiasts/experts" give advice, it is NOT right for one particular "enthusiast/expert" to then NOT give advice free on the forum and instead offer his services via direct email and at a charge. I have to agree on this point (not that I know that Jeff is doing this, I'm just using common sense here!). I think it's a great idea that Jeff has this sideline, dont get me wrong, and I'd have no problem with more people "in the know" like Mr Duff himself or Aaron setting up their own things, BUT I do think it is NOT correct to NOT give free advice via a post on the forum to what a particular problem may be and then email that person offering a paying service to find out. Some people on here just need a pointer in the right direction and can solve the problem themselves with just some helpful thoughts from the tech guys here. Others, like me, need their arses wiped for them and services like Jeff's are very useful BUT it wouldn't be in the spirit of things if free advice and pointers were not given on the forum and business was solicited behind the scence via email. I hope you see what I mean and that I dont mean offense to anyone but I just thought that you two were talking about different things. Cheers, Andy (who only just learnt how turbos work)
February 22, 200224 yr IMHO, everyone should use the forum for advice which in most cases is very good. Anyone have works carried out by other members offering services needs to be aware of the risks involved with any upgrade work. For anyone who knows how to carryout boost upgrades etc; the job is relatively simple. For owners who do not understand the complexity of the Z engine, upgrading is complicated. I had a boost upgrade a few years back on a brand new set of turbo's that were run in over 2500miles. As soon as the boost upgrade was carried out and the road test was complete, the turbo's smoked really bad. On investigation, the 'new pair' of turbo's had worn the rear seals and were basically on there way out The company who carried out the work took full responsibility for the problem. If this had happened from someone doing me a favour....and I didn't know about the Z engine back then... who would be responsible? Not wanting to upset anyone here or anything
February 22, 200224 yr Apologies to Craig and Nico. This section of the forum is for Technical Advice. Ooops
February 22, 200224 yr I feel I must throw my 10p worth in here guys and gals. I have lost count of the times I have called Jeff with questions that I really should know the answer too an never been charged for his time (sure he must get fed up with me asking questions all the time!) the only times I have been charged are; Full service (including all filters, oil change, fluids cecked and topped as needed, AIV's drained and drilled, throttle bodies cleaned and engine bay clean) told me what I should be changing sooner rather than later and all that for a small sum of money that a Nissan mechanic would not even get out of bed for. Fitting of traction control (including Diagnostic) whic works pukka and has saved me twice so far!! And I am about to have the headlight conversion and some other little jobs doing. From my experience the advice is free and work you have to pay for, nothing wrong with that me thinks, it's just that Jeff is far, far cheaper than any mechanic I know around here and he deffo knows his Z's from his X's. Top stuff Jeff, keep it up...can't be going to Nissan to be ripped off all the time and they would charge you for advice given half the chance. And while I'm here, BIG thanks to Andy Duff and Timmy Top Lad Turbo, firstly to Andy for fitting the exhaust to my Z, pain in the arse it was too (The PS2 games are on the way!) and to Timmy thanks for the donation of the exhaust which now has fumes flowing through it, loverly. Owe you both big time! There is room for everyone, advice is free but if work needs doing you know that needs paying for, can't do that for free. Matty. ------------------ Bounce...Bounce...Bounce...Bounce...Bounce...Bounce...Bounce... (sorry no sound!) LOL
February 22, 200224 yr Erm, can only assume Jeff TT's message to me re. the leccytronics fixes has sparked this off. Now from an end-user's point of view (OK, spot the IT techie)... I've had loads of help about this, some e-mailed, some on the forum. Some has included a quote, some has just been free advice. Im very grateful for all of it. However, as I am no car mechanic I asked for advice on doing the work, AND a quote for fixing. My reasons: 1. I don't have the time / skill to do it myself. 2. I need my car to be running as reliably as possible. 3. If anything goes wrong I'd prefer to have work covered by a warranty. 4. After being ripped off by Nelson once I'm NEVER going to them again (besides, even my limited knowledge of the Zed seemed to be better than theirs) In conclusion, I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about getting the car fixed but I'm WAY further ahead than I would be without this forum. Even if I don't take on people's free advice this time, it is very useful to have and is good armament when dealing with mechanics. Hopefully, as I get more experienced with the Zed I'll be able to offer free advice, and if anyone does good professional work for me I'm more than hapy to recommend them. OK, that's my sixpennorth (inflation?). James.
February 22, 200224 yr Oh B*ll*cks! I know I shouldn't have replied this morning ... It's all been taken out of proportion, albeit very carefully and diplomatically. Mr Duff - hope you understand what I was getting at. Again, no offence or disrespect intended to anyone. Andrew - I see your point(s) and raise you the following: Jeff is not soliciting business by e-mailing direct and not posting advice. Just do a search and you'll see what I mean. Sometimes it is easier to sort issues out away from a public forum - hence the private e-mails. (I think we all know about the perrils of posting on public forums ...) JamesP - spot on fella, thanks for posting that. Cheers all, Danny --> holding head in hands while smacking forehead ...
