Guys and Gals,

My GF's Bro has just passed his test and is trying to insure a Renault 5 GT Turbo (my old motor) he's only 18 and obviously negat no-claims! Anyone know any insurance company that might give him a decent quote?

Just tried Elephant and they quoted 4472 squids! Eh? You having a laff Misseur Elephante, FFS, where are all these kids that are driving high powered motors and heavily modded getting insured?

Most of them look like they're only just outta puberty and yet they're driving around in Punto GT's and Corsa's maxxed upto the hilt.

Plus my other arguement is this...what these kids have to do now to even pass the test in the first place is nigh on being qualified for MENSA, what with the theory and hazard awareness etc.

Surely most of the young drivers of today are much better and more competently qualified to get behind the wheel compared to most of us from yesteryear who only had to have a couple of lessons, do reversing around a corner, three point turn and a sodding hill start! LOL :D

TIA

Tell him to buy a C5 the mighty Reno is far too aggresive for a kid to play in, whats wrong with kids of today? Tell him to pay 4k+ for insurance or wait until he gets a few years on him to insure that turbo charged shoe box.

LMFAO :D

Yeah good point but at least he'd be the coolest kid in the village and be a bit different from all the others who drive around in a 1.2 Corsa with an exzorzt louder than any Z I know of!

His village is full of sheep, I now live where there are no oversized Tampons mate! LMFAO :D

It also does my head in, being used to driving performance motors you know that when you hear a rip roaring zorst coming that it's bound to be something nice...like a Scooby or a GTi-R or something along those lines. So to keep looking out the window and seeing a 1.2 Corsa thrashing up and down the street or a Punto GT is quite a time waster! ;)

my first car was a r5 gtt aged 18, and fook me they are dangerous! my friend had one as well, he crashed it not even going that quick and it just crumples like paper. a big thing with insurance people think its all done on power and engine size, a large part of there pricing comes from the number of people who have died in these cars. luckily i never had the mis fortune of crashing mine, the turbo seals went instead! i then went to an s13, now a jspec TT at 21 which is fookin killing me insurance but touch wood ive never been in an accident. so not everyone under 25 cant drive (just most of us!)

try sabre insurance, theyre covering my zed pretty cheap

I forgot about that.........................

A mate of mine had one and talk about paper thin, he once was stuck in snow and when a group of us pushed him out we dented all the wings with our hands,I think I have seen more strength in a tin of quaility street LOL

I would hate to think I had a smash in one above 15mph :wack: :nono:

lol, doesnt suprise me mac!

or even better was my mates uno turbo, rapido but the bonnet decided to come up at about 70, he flapped, stacked it and rolled it on to its roof, the whole thing just came apart! we were lucky to get out of that one. between the two of those cars theyve gotta be the most dangerous cars to feck about in. so tell him to be carefull! but fair play to the lad for saying no to gippin corsas and the like (sorry guys i just have a hatred for chav mobiles!)

My son is 19. two years no claims and pass plus. mondeo 1.6 base 16V no mods £1200. GT Turbo ...I would say forget it?

the reason there are so many corsas and puntos is that they are cheap! doesnt mean chav, just means "young driver" :)

renault 5 gts are awful cars anyway, id say save up then get a 205 gti or a saxo vtr, theyre not too bad on insurance.

@ jacks300zx - would you mind saying how much you're insured for? just im the same age etc etc and would be good to know :) i have 3 years NCB

Fair point, not all young drivers are Chavs.

I think it's about 99.9999999999999%, but not ALL!! :p ;)

does your mate have a pass plus?

Personally i think at 18 the little renault 5 is a bit much for him as a first car unless he's quite sensible.

Then again when i was that young i wanted one, i thought i could take on the world though, im glad i didn't now though as i'd have probably crashed in it

or do what i did and bought a z when i was 21 and pay £1500 per year

I owned a R5 Turbo when I was 21, cost me £1400 for the year in insurance & that was back in 1990

It had been chipped up to 150BHP & used to go like fook!!

sheesh, im 21 with a 1.8 turbo Leon Cupra. 180bhp and its £800ish a year fully comp!!

sheesh, im 21 with a 1.8 turbo Leon Cupra. 180bhp and its £800ish a year fully comp!!

thats why

mine went down to £800 when i was 23 though

hehe nah i was referring to the Renault 5 Turbo being £1400 a year! thats a lot :D can't wait to get a zed, im downgrading my cupra for a year so i can save money. it rinses fuel (the way i drive it!) and my loan is costing me alot each month...so, save money for a year and then hopefully buy a fatboy zed like sgt c's :)

just got it with sabre, i think is the name, went through the insurance section of auto trader, put my old dear down as a second driver, 7000miles a year , im 21 and have absolutely no no claims. and that works out 1500 third party, so with a bit of luck u should be laughing mate.

nice one! is that a TT or NA? import etc?

only thing is i do alot more than 7k a year :)

Sell the r5, & get a r21 turbo.(thats if u can find one!)

You'll get more for the r5 than the r21 will cost!

They'll be cheaper on insurance as they're classed

as 'family saloons', having 4 doors and all.

And a whole lot quicker too.

My mate had a modded R5 Turbo running about 320bhp and won in a feature in Max Power years ago for the fastest R5 they tested out of about 8 that turned up.

His brakes and suspension were standard and they said in the review that the car was an accident waiting to happen and to get it sorted before he killed himself LOL

It was seriously quick though :)

****in hell! 320 bhp in one of those? that would keep up with MAC lol :D my mate is currently building a Hayabusa-powered mini, guna be about 3.5 seconds 0-60!!

luckily he gets free insurance cos he works in a garage!

My GFs little bro is the same. He is just doing his theory now and already had a fully kitted Fiesta Van. Its a diesel and I told him to leave it like that. But he bought a reconditioned RS Turbo engine ready to fit with a few uprated parts. But the only thing is when he does thing a few things will happen:

- He will kill himself

- All the chavs will attempt to steal it

- Insurance will kill him, but I doubt he will insure it properly which I will kill him for. I hate that sort of thing.

I had a R5, 180bhp death trap on wheels cos if you crash it will look like a squashed coke tin. Every single metal panel is wafer thin. Thats why almost every R5 you look at is dented and has the usual parking dents.

I am selling my old one as it has been off the road for a wee while now.

Tell him to sell it and buy a car with cheaper insurance, although for the power and speed of the R5 its better than most. PS I am only 21 and pay £1700 FC for the Z(import TT) doing 6k a year. Bets bet is to build up his no claims so when he gets near to 21 he can insure a car without wasting all his money.
