I have a 1990 300ZX 2+2 N/A auto import.

I seem to have a strange noise from underneath when I start up.

There is also a grinding noise sometimes when I'm driving.

I have concerns it may have something to do with the auto box or maybe the torque converter.

I'm relatively new, so wouldn't want to get stitched up when I take it to a garage.

Does this sound like a common fault?, if so, could you advise as to what I should hear from a mechanic when I take it to a garage.

It may sound like a ridiculous request to some, but I have had work done in the past only to find out later that what they had done had nothing to do with the fault so I ended up spending loads of money needlessly.

Any help would be appreciated.

the gearing inside the starter motor can wear & cause a grinding noise while engaged.

No, I don't have the air con on,it's an annoying sound, not all the time, but there is definately something either rubbing or working loose, there has always been a slight noise down by the drivers side bulkhead, it's obviously coming from the engine bay, I can hear it when the car is stationary.

I've tried to locate where the noise is coming from, but haven't been able to put my finger on it.

The main noise that I enquired about is worse when I put the car in reverse, and it obviously makes a noise in drive, that's why I think I may have a problem with the gearbox.

I think Paul C's theory may have cured the query I have with the noise down by the drivers side bulkhead though, thanks, I will look into that.

Strange noise? So it's the grinding noise you can hear even when it's stationary???? Might be idler pulleys. Maybe power steering pump?? Does it change pitch or loudness when the engine is revved? More info please. :)

Jack and Tower,

Gurgling, no.

It does change pitch and loudness, yes.

Sometimes it even stops.

Sooooooo confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I think so.

Sorry guys, but I really am at a loss.

I drove it earlier, and nothing!!!!

There is a little vibrating as well, propshaft bearings?

Mine started to make a metallic grating noise as I pulled away and then stopped, always sounded like it came from the passenger footwell, cost me nearly 2k to put right. Mine was the autobox about to give up, what colour is the autobox oil and does it smell burnt? You are best taking the car to a specialist for the Zed.

You need to get it up on ramps to have a look underneath. My NA auto had a loose starter motor (only just held on with one bolt) when I got it - Easy fix. If it is the starter it could be out of alignment with the ring - and catching at certain points ie when placed in reverse.

And if you've a fertile imagination, imagine it falling off at speed... If it dson't kill you it'll kill whoevers behind you.

They tell me the weather's going to be fine this weekend - perfect for getting under the car.

Whilst you are under there check for loose engine covers - those big plastic things at the front. Spin the back wheels and check for knackered wheel bearings. Check the exhause for loose joints and suspension rubbers. Check that the heat shield for the cat is tight and all the bolts are present. Also check (if you can) for play in the prop centre bearing. Also, before you put it back on the ground, spray all of the rubber suspension components and tops and bottoms of the shocks inc the shiney rods with silicone lubricant. Finally check that the rear number plate isn't loose. It's loose on my current car and sounds like the fuel pump's packing up - which it isn't...

Good luck

Jack

Thanks Jack, I shall be on my back all weekend now, will let you know how I get on.
