The CIA was recruiting for the position of assassin. They had one

vacancy; there were three candidates - two women and a man. The interview

procedure was very thorough. At the end of the day the three candidates

were advised that they had to pass a final test, designed to ensure that

they would carry out any order, regardless of the circumstances.

 

The first woman was taken to a metal door and given a gun. She was told

"Inside this room you will find your husband, sitting in a chair. We want

you to kill him." She responded without hesitation: "Oh no, I couldn't

possibly do that. Not my husband - I love him!" On hearing this, the senior

agent shook his head, held out his hand and thanked the woman for applying,

explaining that she clearly did not have the necessary qualities for the

position they were seeking to fill.

 

The second woman was taken to a similar door, given a gun and told "Inside

this room you will find your husband, sitting in a chair. We want you to

kill him." She hesitated a moment, then took a deep breath and went into

the room, closing the door behind her. There was silence for a few

minutes, then the sound of gentle weeping could be heard. Finally the woman

emerged, sobbing. "I'm sorry" she said, "I thought I could do it but I

can't". "Then you're not the person we're looking for"" said the agent.

"Go home."

 

The man was then taken to a third metal door. The agent handed him a

gun and told him "Inside this room you will find your wife sitting on a

chair. We want you to kill her." The man opened the door and walked

into the room, shutting the door firmly behind him. There was a brief

period of silence and then several shots were heard, one after another,

followed by screams and crashing sounds, and banging on the walls. Then

there was silence. A few seconds later the man emerged, wiping the sweat

from his brow. On seeing the agent's startled expression he explained

"Bloody gun was loaded with blanks - I had to beat her to death with the chair!"
