Some of you may know already and some of you dont.

Right basically i got the car (i got ripped off obviously) in about november, since then i have spent loads of money fixing the fooker.

Tonight i got a compression tesat which turned out pretty dam bad and points to the ring being fooked.

So now after already spending so much im left with 3 choices.

Do i get the engine rebuilt?

Get a replacement engine?

Break her?

Someone please help.

Im so sick of the dam car i could cry now

Are there still any experts left? LOL :D Most of them charge too much and do more damage than fixing!

Personally i would brake it and look for a good one and learn from a bad experiance !

Sorry to ask again mate but apart from the low comp reading what other symptoms of ****edness is the engine giving?

Is it running poorly? Lack of power?

I really can't believe what bad luck you've had with your car, Lee. Fair play to you for sticking with it and investing lots of cash in to try and get it running correctly - it would be a shame to lose the lot and still end up having to break her, mate. Hopefully some more qualified help than mine can help you make up your mind as to whether it'd be cheaper to invest more in to get her going right or take a chance on a another one. I hope you get this one or another zed running as it should soon, as you sure deserve to enjoy the pleasures of a well running one soon, buddy! All the best,

Simon

The actual running of the engine is very smooth indeed mate, lack of power yes, other than that the car is spot on really. :(

Thanks for that Simon.

Looks like it'll be best if i get another engine thats working properly and just swap them

Once that is done i can break the old engine and use all the good bits or maybe even repair it

Well for ease its better to get a new engine, and cheaper :smash:

But he's happy either way really but i think it'd be a shame to break her after putting so much time and money into it.

AGREE TOTALLY

And you have answered your own poll

Ello,

I haven't read the whole post, could not be arsed. But I personally think better the devel you know. You could go out, spend another 5k on a Z, have it inspected, and something still die on it a week later. TBH from experience, 9/10 you are lucky to get a good Z. As said, you can buy a car which is running mint, and something can just give out on it weeks down the line.

I'm not sure what you have already spent on her, but at least you know whats wrong with it, and whats right. You know what's been replaced so that won't be a problem anymore.

I sold my Z to a friend, it was running mint when I sold it, a month down the line the turbos decided to spit an oil feed off of them, and starve the turbos, unfortunatly the car was driven with no oil for abit which resulted in the car dying totally and needing a rebuild. But the point is, it was fine when I sold it, no one could have forseen that would have happened, and boom a 5k bill. Exactly the same could happen to anyone.

Another friend of mine spent over 6.5k on a Z, had it all checked out and all was mint. Four weeks in autobox gave up, got a replacement by SE 1.7k, four weeks later gearbox gave up but they wern't around to replace it, another place and another 1.5k.

You need to bare in mind that all of these cars are the best part of 15 years old, unless you buy one which has had new tubbies, engine rebuild, box blah blah blah there is no guarantee any of it will last. Like I said most of it is down to luck more than judgement.

I say if you like Z's then keep it if it's not totally ****ed that is, and get it sorted, otherwise you could be out of pocket and in the same postition again with another 1.

Good luck!

ah well thats pretty slow, least you can still drive it, gives you time to decide the car's fate or time to get some pennies together.

Thanks for that mate

Just as another thought, before you do go any further take the thing apart as much as you can, well, what I mean is check as much as you can so you know what you are looking at, if you've already spent that sort of cash, you should have replaced some major parts already that you won't need to worry about again. If you get her fixed, don't forget the little things like hoses etc, whilst your making her good would be a shame to spring a coolant leak or oil leak etc and cause more probs for the sake of a couple of quid. Much easier to replace all of that stuff with the engine being done of course too.

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for the Z and how many miles has it done?

not worth breaking as one of the biggest earners is the engine and yours maybe fooked

get a few prices for a rebuild and some to swop an engine (and the price of buying the engine)

then go from there

Hey Bird, if the engine is sweet and you do not require the car for day to day use, i.e. getting to work etc., you may as well take the engine out and take the heads off and look inside. If necessary mark the pistons and bigends and take the pistons out that are showing the lowest compressions. If it is just rings and the pistons are not damaged, whoopee. A new set of rings plus gaskets and you are back on the road. Better the devil you know than another pain in the wallet from an engine from a scrappy.

Who knows, its pretty much been bad since i got it.

It was origionally an auto and it seems the box was on its way before i got it, martyn at zen then changed it to a manual for me, he didn't notice it was running wrong though when he drove it, then i needed rear shocks, some other bits and bobs too, and now its a rebuild job, or maybe a new/second hand engine if there's one for an ok price that is.

It looks like its the rings on mine because after i got a 7.5 reading on the compression test i then did it wet and it jumped up to 9.

Does it use water ? Whats it breathing like ? Is there bubbles or oil in the water ? In the back of Jap tuner there is a company that does second hand engines direct from japan for £700 plus vat. comes with small guarantee. I think its three months ! Did you do the compression test whilst the engine was hot or cold ?

Look to the future mate.

If the ancillarys are good then go for a upgraded rebuild( forged bottom end )

It would be a waste to go for a rebuild and not prepare for future gains and put a degree of safety into it.

Just my two peneth

just he has had so much bad luck with this car, i think the previous owner wants shooting with shite for selling such a shitter

Well said mate, I couldn't have put that better myself! I have had similar experiences with my Z from day 1! Which is why even though it does about 0 miles each year I will never sell it.

I have dumped that much cash into it I would be an idiot to part with it for what? 3K if I was the luckiest bast@rd on the planet on a good day with the wind behind me.

Z's are what I would describe as a "fragile" sports cars even though when they first came out the motoring press said they were excellent value for money, an every day supercar...yeah right until about 60K miles and then they are a nightmare to keep running on an everyday basis.

Keep the Z and get a second car is the way to go, which is why I now have two Toyota's in my livery which never miss a beat on an every day basis.

But I still love and have a passionate fondness of the Z coz when it is working nothing can come close as a substitute for what it is. ;)

i had my z for 2years only fault was a viscous fan £30 apart from general servicing,i just spent 10k on modding it instead :wack: so it goes to show there are good ones out there, and if they were well maintained by the previous owner-then theres no reason for them to last well, not to many good ones about though-there getting on 15+years old so things will fail

way i look at it spend 2k and expect to pay the same again for repairs

spend 5k on a well cared for example and you will find yourself alot happier and better off in the long run.

greg

keep the car,you would be a fool to break it,there not worth enough in parts anymore, and what you have put in to it would be criminal to sell for pennies, get a runaround, lock here up,save up and rebuild
