OK Guys I am new to motorbikes really, I know of a few different makes and models but everytime I do insurance I get killed. I have my test booked in April and will be able to ride anything (no dirty comments please, lol  ). My mate originally had a Honda VFR 400, I like though, but being 6 foot 3", I am a wee bitty too big for it.

Anybody else have any other suggestions. I have tried a Suzuki GSXR 600 >2k insurance, Suzuki GSXF 600 >1.5k insurance. All because I am 21 with no riding experience etc.

I am not really too fussed about the size of the thing, I like sports type bikes and will only be doing few thousand miles a year. Cheap insurance is the main thing though. Price range is up to £2k.

Help pick me a bike please!

pick up a decent vfr400 for 1k, mine cost £1600, not spent anything on it all year :P

Carol Nash from my dealings with them cos they recommended a fantastic Solicitors after my crash. :wack:

This was my bike after it was modified by the 'old git' :xxx: ....................................

Most VFR400s are 15 - 20 year old sheds.

You'll get a nice, clean 5 year old SV650 for £2K.

15-20 year old bikes handle like a pig on a roller skate unless every bearing and bush and all the suspension and linkages have been changed - which they never have.

Despite being 15bhp more powerful, the SV is two insurance groups lower.

Also most VFR400s are imports.

i think you should go test ride the bikes first go decide what u want :P, alot of people have different riding styles etc for me i find an sv 650 uncomfortable to ride, but my mate has one and swears by it.

granted there are alot of vfr400 sheds out there, but i chose the vfr400 because is looks like a sportsbike and does me fine, i'd even go as far as saying it is a sportsbike but some ppl might slate me for that. i like small bikes because there lighter too so easyer to ride day to day.

idealy i would like a gsxr 1000 but ins would be 2k which im not gunna pay for somthing i only use in summer and besides i wouldnt trust myself with a 1000 yet i not got enough riding experiance i'd end up killing myself on a 1000 somehow.

Dunno if an FZR600 has been mentioned yet (couldn't be arsed to read the whole thread!!!) but well worth considering. I've got a '95 FZR600R, bought it in july last year for £1300 in mint condition with only 15500 miles on it. I think they're overlooked quite alot in favour of the thundercat even though they're basically the same, just cheaper to insure. It'll still pull yer face off if you want it too, 100bhp and I've had mine up to 140mph so far (on a track of course)!!! This is the one that looks the same as the YZF750.

like the fzr and nearly got one a couple of years ago.

TBH since looking for a bike it seems you can get a decent newish bike for not too much money ( 2K gets you something decent).

know of a couple of people with the sv650 and they both swear by them.

Just tried the FZR600 on insurance and its 1600 FC.

That 2003 on SV does look much better than previous.

I wish I had seen this thread while I was on leave, I`m looking for a good home for my baby

This isnt mine but it is visually identical to mine

mmm nice old school gixxer there i wouldn't mind one.. just sold my GSXR600K1 for the Z (only car i would have sold it for) but seeing everyone on bikes again really brings it back.

Dave i was going to suggest getting an older bike like the GSXR above, maybe the 600 though, should be cheap enough on insurance. I've got a wee 400 Bandit still and it does feel like a toy now but still great fun.

Anyway i'd either suggest an older sports bike like the one above or get a trail bike/supermoto to learn your skills on first maybe a DR400, XR400 or somethin'.. loads of pull great fun not expensive to drop and you'll defo fit on one.

I havent run this bike for nearly 2 years (since I started working overseas) but iirc I was about £400 tpft, its a `91 GSXR 750 WN if you want to get a quote for it. It is an american import although the only real difference from UK bikes at the time was a better colour scheme (imho of course). Its quite heavy (compared to modern bikes) but this just makes it more stable than more modern track orientated bikes.

It will still see the bad side of 160mph ( on your drive way of course ;) )

Nice one. I will go and try insurance for it now. What price are you looking for?

Third party only £37,000 no joke. But when I went TPF&T it went down to £800.

I may be interested in buying this bike m8. But money is very tight just now as I am buying a house too. You could always give me a phone on 07917 507 361.
