OK Guys I am new to motorbikes really, I know of a few different makes and models but everytime I do insurance I get killed. I have my test booked in April and will be able to ride anything (no dirty comments please, lol  ). My mate originally had a Honda VFR 400, I like though, but being 6 foot 3", I am a wee bitty too big for it.

Anybody else have any other suggestions. I have tried a Suzuki GSXR 600 >2k insurance, Suzuki GSXF 600 >1.5k insurance. All because I am 21 with no riding experience etc.

I am not really too fussed about the size of the thing, I like sports type bikes and will only be doing few thousand miles a year. Cheap insurance is the main thing though. Price range is up to £2k.

Help pick me a bike please!

Well there is all the 400's like VFR ZXR and GSXR, maybe the ZZR600 thats not as sporty to ride but insurance should be cheaper and its a 600. I always found the 400's to be physically to small for me, I am only 6 ft tall but they were too cramped.

Suzuki SV650S is insurance group 10 and quite sporty.

Edit - if you use a dealer, Cupar MCs in Fife are great.

Thanks guys, I will go try some of these out on insurance. Any good online ones?

I'm with Mr David on this on, SV650S, cheap insurance, quick enough and stylish bike!!

Not bad for wheelies either ;)

Ins wise, Id say Footman James or http://www.motorcycledirect.co.uk (only cos my mate works there) :D

IIRC, insurance groups:

GSXR600 - 14

GSXF600 - 11

VFR400R - 12

CBR600F - 12

SV650S - 10

ZZR600 - 12

RF600 - 12

RS250 - 12

If they're all too high, the unfaired SV650 (no S on the end) is group 9.

Honda's NSR250 is group 11 but only a grey import and fragile - and getting old for a tuned two stroke!

An old Yamaha TZR250 would be worth a look if you find a nice one but they're small.

zzr 600 but also agree SV650s good all rounder and turns heads , you wont be dissapointed

my first bike was a suzuki rf600. it was cheap to insure, was quick enough for a starter, and i quite like the looks although they arent to everyones liking.

i would say they were suzukis version of the honda cbr600......but not quite as good (only just short of the mark though).

you can easily buy a half decent one for 1500ish.

my idea was i didnt want to do what all my mates had done and that was buy a brand new gsxr600/cbr600, thrash the living day lights out of it, no doubt drop it at some point, and then end up losing £££££££££s when i came to sell it.

just got a zx9r ninja which i cant wait to use!!!

get an Aprilia RS125 or RS250 for a few months you will have a hoot! and be amazde at which fun ul have. My 125 is an absolute weapon on the twisty stuff. i had to get mine cos i was under 21 at the time. depends how you want to drive it tho.

then once uve got used to throwing it about have a look at a bigger bike.

Nah I have stood next to a 125 before. I think my Road Push Bike is bigger than those. Anyway, I know that if I bought one, I would sell it within a few days of use, cos I know it wouldnt be powerful enough. I want the instructors 500 to be a bit bigger already, lol.

I,m hunting for a 350LC at the moment, I wanted one when I was 18 but

A new XR3 won the day

ZX9. They are big bikes and very comfy too...massive old tank on them and bloody fast..wooohooo

Just tried insurance on the Kawasaki ZXR400. £500 Fully comp. I thought that was not bad and a good looking bike. Ill go try a 600 now and give you guys a laugh

Dave G

the RS125 is everybit the same size as the CBR and itl keep up with it. like i say, if you want to drive fast on twisty as **** roads then its a great throw about, but if u just want to sit at a ton + on a straight then ul want a bigger bike.

i am a fellow biker, i got a rvf 400, if your a little taller then just move the pegs back a bit, easy job i think, they cheap to insure, bullet proof engine and fast. good first bike, i still have mine lol.

alot of 6ft + ppl ride the vfr's no worries, ask around on http://www.400greybike.co.uk for more info plenty of 6ft n over riders on there.

my instructor was well cool, i dropped the bike on first u-turn i did, he just laughed at me n told me to do it again. took my test 2 days later and passed lol, only had 2 lessons, and never rode a bike b4 :P (direct access)

When I was out on the first day doing the CBT some guy totally cut me up, the instructor went mental, followed him stopped and I had to hold him back from doing anything else. LOL.

Good set of guys though.

I am doing direct access too, had 4 lessons then stopped when I got this car. I work 12 days on and 2 days off so the 2 days I get off is spent with the car and modifying/fixing it. But I got my finger out and booked the test.

Sounds like I would be better for a smaller size of bike then, possibly as low as a 250 to begin with and moving onto a 400 or so then onto big boy territory.

Dave G

When I did my test you rode round the block while the examiner stood at the side of the road and watched you. Think its probably a tad more difficult to pass now.

I passed my test nearly 3 years ago ...my 1st bike was a ducati 748 the reason, it matched my leathers (I know!!) i still have it and just love going everywhere upside down (If you ride a duke you will know what i mean). Of course its red just like the zed ! I dont know whether its a good 1st bike but its been a real blast and I have no regrets. :D whatever you get I think you will have alot of fun.

if your going for the 250/125 bikes u should be aware that all two stroke engines need oil in with fuel and will need a engine rebuild at least once during your ownership lol !

i'd stick to a 4 cyl bike and be on the road more rather than holding a spanner!
