I'll force myself to enjoy it tho, lol

Featured Replies

it's bad enough getting the front bumper off, a headlight out and getting it back together again..

i can sure wait a long while before i start getting in about the engine.

Good luck mate lol..

Doing the same myself got a week off work and in that time ive got a new front spoiler to fit also want to rip out air con, cruise control ,hicas and anything else thats not required and ive got nice shiney decat and tubby pipes to fit as well gonna be a busy week i think.

My and a mate are doing his 60k service on his zed, stage 3 on engine. 99 front bumper fit n spray and a new rear bumper.

Mine getting new koyo rad (old one sprung a leak) + additional oil cooler. Painted throttle cable cover and timing belt covers (was a sod 2 get off), got the lower stainless rad pipes from DTA. getting intercooler pipes in stainless as well. Got chip.

Just taken out the alloy rad feed pipes and getting a polish job on them. I think the plenum is staying put...I'm not prepared to mess with it yet, lol.

The brake calipers are off...cleaned and repainted blue to suit car. Stainless hoses are going on. Then I want the car to stop properly so will get some coated disks from smithy's (yet to be ordered.)

Ive got the underdrive pulley but not the shorter belts to suit yet. Air box is out, will buy apexi or sim filter when rest is back together.

Got new front bumper but not painted or fitted yet. Rear following, only trouble is I may have to mod the rear to take my standard pipes, I kinda like 2 x twins out the back.

Got new std zx spoiler, fitted it but now dont like it so much, getting a tailgate skin now to replace it.

I will be doing quite a few small mods all over, dont want to go mad yet, no doubt I will be tempted to do tons as I go along...but I will resist.

Ive found a cool paddle changer for auto's that overrides the auto box to work on the paddles like a manual, you can obviously switch between the 2, it looks fiddly to fit but its interesting!!

Will post pics when done, lol

where did you find the paddle changer mate been looking for one of these, got under drive pulley to fit as well just need one more belt for that.

The paddle shift got my attention too when I 1st saw it.

I wonder if any ones fitted on one here?

My only concern is with the car running being aimed at 380/400 bhp -

1. the slushbox might not prove too reliable

2. if it isnt you've added the cost of one of these £650 ish units to the loss of the box if you decide to go manual.

Would be nice to get some more info and test material from 300zx owners whove fitted one of these delicious add ons.

.......but I still want one!!

yeh got the same concerns myself mate you,d probably get most of your money back on fleabay tho odd items like this seem to get good money there. cheap big brake conversion for you mate bmw 330 diesel discs approx 325 mm dia bout the biggest you can fit with 17"s you just need to make an addapter bracket for calipers and a centering ring for the dics stops my z pretty good and can be done for under £100.

Starting on mine tomorrow all suspension being removed for full adjustable suspension and brakes being uprated at the same time, all great fun

Not sure exactly what chip is, was a flea bay item from a guy called Rayaz in Newcastle, it has JWT instructions. It is specific for TT autos.

Not fitted yet...not sure wether to get another one from DTA or Greddy just to make sure it suits the car properly.

A lot of chips just overfuel period. A m8 of mine has one from this guy too and has had no probs. Its hard to tell whats good these days tho.

I must admit its fun working on the car when you choose to.

What I really dont like is working on it when you get probs :headvswal

Lucky tho I've only had a leaky rad but have decided to play with the car a bit while doing the rads etc etc.

No doubt that my luck will change tho :wack:

To acheive that kind of power with standard 370 injectors you'll need a very agressive chip, a good boost controller (ie Apexi, Greddy profec), Good induction kit, new hoses to provent leaks under added boost, Clean and polish your throttle bodies, a decat exhaust system, upgraded IC's would help and forget the carbon coated discs. Go for the Smithy big brake convertion, because even 340bhp will take you one step beyond what your standard brakes will handle. No point sorting your car to park it in a ditch.

Good luck and have fun

Yeah working on this car is a pain usually but not many cars nowadays are not. I find all that it needs is patience and some restraint to say "no dont pull it too hard or you'll break it".

But as I only have 2 or 3 days a month to fix, modify, drive and enjoy the car, I always have to do things very quickly, up early etc.

But in the end I enjoy it, get very annoyed working on the car at the time. But nothing compares to when you do something right and it works first time. Especially with the engine as I am realistically a begginer. I think most people are in the same boat, we hate doing the actual work for modifying/replacing parts, but we keep doing it anyway, for the ending feeling.

Did look at smithy's brakes, will prob end up with em all round.

Nearly shat myself the first time the brakes disappeared :wack:

Theres a lot to do to these cars to get up around 400 hp.

I'm not gonna be too disappointed if I dont make it that far up cos I think the real performance gains are made by ditching all the excess weight.

I am looking to buy a 2nd hand cnc mill to make some of my own parts for new project towards the end of 2006. Would like to buy a runner and then take it COMPLETELY to bits then rebuild with just the basics plus some regular mods....no excessive weight.

I have been buying different types of Carbon and Kevlar from USA to make some assessments for suitability for this project, but most of the car is made up from reasonable light materials...just too much of it. Stuff like the carbon hoods seem to be a complete waste...the original is only a tad heavier. But when you get the dash off there tons of excess metal, this is where a custom made support frame with some milled aluminium parts would work a treat.

You can easily shed 150 kg from this car imho, if your prepared to work aggressively on it I think you can reduce the weight by at least a 1/4 or more, the only problem after that will be controlling traction :wack:

I knew there would be more problems, wheres my tool kit :smash:

For example, I have 6 hours (mostly in darkness) when I get home. To do the following:

- Remove broken PTU.

- Replace new PTU.

- Take out temp rubbish champion sparkplugs and replace with NGK ones.

- Remove 16" standard wheels, replace with my old 17s from MR2 (which fit with a 5mm spacer.)

- Possibly paint brake calipers to blue, wait and see how I feel.

- Car to my m8 in National Tyres who will track the car for me.

- Put mig tips back into boost hoses.

- Replace rest of hoses to blue (kit from Smithy, already 1/3rd done).

- Check hose system at top drivers side of the engine bay (not sure what it is). I think I got the order wrong on replacing items. Just to double check it.

- Not to forget clean the car inside and out for the Scottish meet on Sunday.

Typical story for me though, and between all this it is my Girlfriends birthday. Might have time to say happy birthday once.

Have fun,

Must also add...

This is the first car I've had that I ENJOY, I love it, probs n all.

I think we all do these mods because the car is personal....its not just a ride.

I would like a lambo etc, but more than that I want to be me, riding around in MY idea of a gr8 car. For the performance and style the Z  is bloody hard to beat.

Scoobies n Skylarks may be quick, but the Zed looks bloody fast parked up

Keep a list of all the stuff you remove, I amy just jump on the band wagon with some of the things. Dont really need aircon in Scotland. HICAS possibly too.

Trouble is Dave with these cars if you rush it always goes tits up n gets soooo frustrating.

I want to build up another so I know exactly whats going on and where its at, I just hate it when something doesnt work & I dont know why....especially on the zed. :headvswal

You can take a hell of a lot of stuff off these cars....its frightnening, lol.

I'll keep track of this project and document it all with pics n text so it can be useful to others here.

picked up new veilside nose cone/spoiler today, what should have been a six maybe seven hour round trip turned into ten and a half hours. bad accident shut down the A9 took over an hour to do 1 mile then to be diverted which added 30 miles to trip.Anyway thats me ready to start pulling the z apart was going to keep a record of actual weight savings made when removeing or replaceing parts i.e weigh the new parts before fitting and subtract that from weight of old parts so you should have a good idea of actual wight removed from car, anyone know the weight of a standard front bumper by any chance or has anyone got one removed they could weigh and let me know cheers.

marcz32 my chip is jwt and it was overfueling by about 15% at tickover and low throttle went through £20 of petrol in two days and that was just doing the 3 mile run to and from work, apexi afr sorted that out tho was thinkin on getting one of andyp,s chips there supposed to be pretty good maybe use the afr to fine tune it to car as well.
