Right, first no taking the proverbial!-but due to me doing what I done,i.e.the engine swap, was thinking if there could be a 'market' for it?

Now I use the term loosely-what I mean to say,if I were to start at home doing the conversion, would:

A-I get enough work!

B-It be viable financially,ie, length of time etc.

I suppose it would all boil down to level of interest, but I know I would actually enjoy doing it,plus making a living?

I dunno! -what's the genaral reaction.....(wait for it!) :wack:

If I can ever afford to do it Daz, I would definitely ask for your help in doing the same conversion for me!! You appear to be 'Da Man' for Chevy V8 swaps, just gotta convince the Mrs it's a good idea ;) :wack:

I'm sure you will get a fair bit of interest once the '600ZX' is on the road.

What sort of prices would you be looking for? also what sort of power outputs would we be looking at? how often would it be breaking down etc?

not trying to be negative but i am curious about this sort of thing :)

Membership No 0780

INSURANCE GOOFA

Datascan, Conzult, ECUTalk and a few others

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

i would be very surprised if you wasnt flooded with requests ,

would have to sort the serious ones from the vague , but like you say how do you charge for your time ,

you would probably have to estimate a bill at best , as its never easy doing a quote and sticking to it, there always something that needs replacing,

but like i said before ,, if mine ever went kaboom again , i would do the v8 conversion no hesitation whatsoever, , i do love the v6 and the turbos but two engines would be too much , to bear ,

as for the options on v8 crate motors , limitless to funds really , good luck with this dazz

Prices would have to be agreed mate,as in the next question,-How much do you want/what do you want to spend!

As for reliabilty-again,whether injected or carbed etc,but generally bulletproof!

p.s-not negative at all bud, just the sort of questions I'd expect for anyone contemplating it! :)

might get shot in the foot for this but

IMHO

trying to start a bussiness with something like this wouldnt work, you need to have a quick turnover of work, not somnething that could take months to do, people just wouldnt pay for it

you would have to charge a fortune to make a living out of it, then people would just start to think "well i could spend that much on my current engine and get more bhp"

if you could do them at a quick turn over then yes it would be great, but at the time that this massive task would take i dont think that it is feesable

sorry just my opinion

Allan

Mate you are looking to turn a hobby into a worklife

Tough to do as a hobby implies perfectionist levels.

not really a viable bussiness proposition for a start up.

Sorry

Dude-don't be sorry!-this why I can't decide for definate-don't worry,I've gone through all this over and over! :headvswal

The only answers to the above I have is that it wouldn't take as long if I was full time at it and anyone who specialises in anything, usually charges stupid prices in my experiance!-which is just what I want to avoid! :wack:

As for a hobby-LOL!-been doing it for over 20 years,so I like my hobby! :)

Arrrrrgggggghhhhh!

Also consider what sort of guarantee/warranty you could give and availability of spares and future support

Yeh forgot to mention support

I have played around with a similar sort of idea myself but couldnt make a bussines proposition out of it

you would also have to think about taking someone else on, cause god forbid something happened to you and you were off work for a while, the work would build up and you wont get paid

do yu know anyone that could work with you, that you trust

i think that maybe a garage offering the usual servicing and odd jobs, and also that specialist engine conversion, cause at the end of the day there aint gona be that many people willing to spend that sort of cash on their car

whatever you decide though bud, research it fully (which im sure you would do anyway) and last but not least good luck

Allan

I would let you work on MY Zed.... Good luck 2 ya....

PS. But hope it comes home soon & does not take three years to change the plugs....only jokin bud...go for it.

I know where your coming from mate!-I always considered myself a fair chap

and if anything went t!ts up due to me,I would sort it no question.

Now for example if someone came with a used lump to use,I wouldn't guarantee that!-but would certainly look after anyone that had problems with the same.

Hope you see where I'm coming from-hard to expain myself at times  -think it's a mid-life crisis!! :x:

so what would a ball park figure be on this? obviously depending what engine you go for? seen a list somewhere of the v8's

This had also crossed my mind as I would need some 'bread & butter' work shall we say, only problem is I would deffo have to look into premises for that!

I shall look into it a little further methinks! :smash:

One thing in your favour mate, you are a doo`er !

Some people talk about "doing" things, and some people, just "do" things !

You "do" it rather well ! :)

Maybe would have to consider other applications ?

Mid mounted MR2, Rover V8, coupled to a Renault 3.0ltr transverse box.

If theres enough room, you can fit anything to anything, nearly !

Might be worth considering mate. Some people will spend ludicrous amounts of money to get what they want, and if you arent limited to nights and weekends, it will get done quicker !

Just my tuppence worth.

Cheers Allan! :)

Hi,

that hits the nail on the head really! If you could do light servicing, various machanic stuff to pay the rent and electric on a small premises thats a great start. You mentioned you've been tinkling with cars for 20 years. don't waste that experience.

I have to agree with stellaz that working for weeks on the same car is just not financially viable unless you have a nice stash in the bank to support you.

I'm going through a similar experience now, I've just finished my first week as a self employed man and I feel happier than i've ever felt in the last ten years. Took me a while to take the plunge, and worked 12 hours a day for the last 7 days but feel fantastic. Still shitting myself about getting the bank to balance up but my mind seems to be working better and fresher.

If you put the same conviction into a business as you did you're engine swap you won't go wrong my friend!
