High Oil Pressure when Cold

Have just given my Z (1991) an oil change + flush and new filter and the oil pressure gauge now rises higher than I've ever seen it before (to about 7) when the engine is cold. It returns to normal when the engine has reached its usual running temperature. Is this the normal behaviour of the oil pressure gauge or has the oil change freed up some kind of blockage causing unusual gauge readings? Any advice welcome :)

Sounds OK to me mate.

Oil pressure may well increase after an oil and filter change. The old filter could have become gunked-up and new, clean oil will flow better thus improving pressure. Also the old oil may not have been as good quality as the new.

Any number of reasons really - only worry if the pressure falls when driving fast!

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yeah, mine does the same thing. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere else that this is fairly normal so I wouldn't worry.

hehe i think if i have my science right the cold oil is much thicker (more viscous) and when it heats up it thins therefore deducing oil pressure.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure its normal as my car is exactly the same so not to worry!

reducing pressure*

spot on wolfy :)
