The government were recently blaming bad parenting for the ASBO society we have today. I agree, a lot of it is to do with bad parenting but if I thought I wasn't gonna get slapped for doing wrong by MY OWN PARENTS then, as a kid, I would have run riot FFS. Looks like we'll have to resort to saying "Dear Johnny, please don't set fire to our house - there's a good boy".

a light smack around the legs or backside to enforce not doing something wrong is the best way.

id like to take do-gooder tosspots like that out onto the streets at night and get them to have a conversation with a gang of hoodies as to how no smacking has helped them grow up into responsible and law-abiding adults.

The problem is that the damage has already been done. Those kids are becoming parents (usually at 13), WTF are their kids gonna turn out like :mac1:

if a 14 year old girl can video a gang doing over a helpless bloke then surely that is evidence that the last thing this country needs is more fookin liberals telling us we shouldn't do this and shouldn't do that...

Can only shake my head in sorrow at this. I like most of my generation grew up with a dad who was not adverse to the odd well placed slap, coppers who were willing and able to give you a dig and teachers who used corporal punishment (leather belt in my case) and feel that it kept me on the straight and narrow (ish).

 

The problem, as stated, is that we are now in the middle of the second generation of people who reach the age of maturity never having been put in their place by any form of authoity. So even if we put things right now, it would be another two generations before we saw the effects.

 

My view is that large gentlemen of a handy nature should be recruited ( a la jury duty) and on their sixteenth birthday, or as soon after as possibe, all young guys should be presented for a bl00dy good right hander. Just to let them know that their are consequences in life, and that there are people who can and will put you in your place if you step out of line.

 

As it stands you can go from the cradle to the grave without ever coming across an authority figure who will do more than give you an ASBO (or medal of honour as it seems to be known) a work order ( which you will never turn up for) borstal/ prison ( where for the first time in your scabby life you will have 3 hots and a cot and someone to teach you how to screw the system (and probably give you a drug habit if you didnt have one))

here here jock.. well said.. i have 2 young lads, and altho rarely, i DO give them a clip if they get out of hand... they get sent to bed and stay there until the problems sorted out... doesnt do them any harm (both excell at school and socially) so how can the do-gooders say it makes for a twisted child...

 

on the other hand, having worked in childrens units and in prisons, i have also seen the levels of neglect and abuse some so called parents (i'd personally LOVE a 1 to 1 "chat" with them all" ) inflict on their children...

 

i think this is aimed at the latter as opposed to the former, but saying cart blanche this will eleviate problems is bollix...
