Im sure im opening up for some abuse, but my mrs wants an mx5, 1.6 or 1.8, around the 4k - 5k mark. I dont know anything about them to be honest (not my kinda car.. sure people understand.) but was just wondering if anyone has any advice for buying (or not) and what to look for.

Thanks all

great car in terms of doing what it was designed for - know a few people that use tehm as cheap track cars and love them cos they handle well and never (seem to) break down!!

I undersstand most people go for J-Spec as they're considerably better trimmed, and have an LSD as standard (not sure if this was for all models though). You'll have to ship around though as there are loads of dogged ones about, although you should get a real tidy one for 5k - I know someone who found a mint limited edition one for that, and it wasn't that old neither!

Good luck - just don't let anyone catch you driving it on the road ;)

Mines up for sale soon.

1991 Eunos Roadster 1.6,

A mate was / is selling his one owner 2002 16,000 minter for £7500 if you're interested.

It's yellow and in the Manchester area.

Not cheap but it's a 2002 car and these things hold their value very well.

Iv got an MX5 Mk2 1.8, great little car, pretty nippy considering, great handling and fairly cumfy, havnt had any problems with it apart from it needing new plugs and leeds. It will probably need a clutch soon but i do drive it pretty hard.

http://www.mx5ocforum.co.uk has great advice and http://www.mx5parts.co.uk has a great selection of accessories. Also http://www.performance5.co.uk for all your engine tuning needs.

Might not break any land speed records but the MX-5 is a proper sports car IMO

Got my Mrs one last June. 1.6 on a G plate with fancy a/m front bumper, bucket seats, a/m alloys, lowered, S/S manifold and full exhaust, K&N induction, Chrome roll over bars and complketely resprayed in a blue metallic. It's done about 130k and still drives like a new car. Ok it's not very quick but it is a hell of a lot of fun. I WOULD RECOMEND TO ANY WOMAN! :)

Mazda should make something similar, maybe a bit bigger with equivalent power to the ZX... yea they could call it the RX7!!!!

My mate got one and it was great. I can hardly fit in it but he's a midget anyhow! He'd never owned a performance car and was drifting it round roundabouts completely under control within a month. Great handling, I was really impressed. I'd like to get one for the missus as well. Dave

Never go wrong so I am told. Better than the MG as they blow the head gasket.

my mate just sold an mx5 with big turbo. It was mk1 but 224bhp for 3300 quid...lol
