Hi there!

Turned on the PC yesterday and after about 2 minutes a dialogue box came up asking if I want to download a Java update (I was working in Dreamweaver at the time). Clicked OK and after about 7 minutes another box appeared stating that the installation of "J2SE Runtime Environment 5 Update 6" was complete. Didn't think much of it at the time.

Later on during the day I started noticing that opening applications was taking longer than normal. Also, when browsing the Internet pages were much slower to open.

Performed all the virus and spyware scans I normally do on a weekly basis (McAfee Anti-virus & anti-spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy & Webroot Spysweeper). Nothing was found (took about 3 hours to complete all the scans). I then had a look in the "Add and Remove Programs" section of the Control Panel and found two instances of the "J2SE Runtime Environment 5" - one was update 3 (117Mb) and the other update 6 (119Mb).

I've also looked at the memory usage and cpu load and both are well within their limits. Also looked at the programmes in the startup sequence and there is nothing there to suggest it should be running slow.

Here's the relevant spec of the PC:

AMD64 3500+

2Gb RAM

2x 160Mb SATA HDD

HIS Excalibur ICE-II X800XT ATI 256Mb

Windows XP Pro (SP2)

2Mb aDSL Broadband (Nildram)

Now here is the weird bit. If I first log-on to the PC using my wife's settings and then log-off and log-on using my settings there is no problem and everything is much quicker ...

I'm not a PC genius so any pointers would be much appreciated!

Cheers!

Dan

Further to what I posted earlier I've also noticed this morning that during start up the PC now goes through a "pre-boot" sequence. Never seen that before. It then displays some info about a "MAC address" and searching for a "DCHP" ... It then finally states something along the lines of "no boot address found" and then continues merrily witht he bootup sequence. Everything works fine after this. Could this be related in any way to the slow performance?

PS - next time I reboot I'll have a closer look at what is being displayed during the pre-boot sequence.

Sounds like in the BIOS its set to boot from other devices or from network adaptor in the boot order. Go into the bios and dissable/remove it from the boot sequence.

Doubt it would have anything to do with the slow running.

Thanks, will have a look and let you know. I haven't been in the BIOS since I built the PC (that's over a year ago now ...) Don't see why that would have changed all of a sudden.

Cheers for the reply!

If i was you id go into the bios and restore the factory settings. then go to the section that will be somthing like "boot priority" and go floppy, cd/dvd and then your boot hard drive. try that first.

or if your getting really annoyed, put all your files on the second harddrive and format the c: drive. all your files will be fine, they come back when SP2 is installed. if you need a hand getting hold of disks let me know as i can sort you out.

hope that helps

also try using this program http://www.download.com/FreeRAM-XP-Pro/3000-2086_4-10485945.html?tag=lst-0-2 it frees up your ram and is really usefully and will help you a lot too

Thanks for all the advice and download links - I really appreciate it! :D

I've installed the defrag programme you suggested and it's done its magic - it hasn't changed the way the PC runs but I suppose it's now properly defragged. I'd appreciate the pro version - pm me if you like.

I've got to sort out a lot of administration work tonight and don't want to do anything to the PC which may crash it (or worse)... Will try the BIOS setting tomorrow.

Cheers!

danny if you still have my number gimme a call matey..

big si

Try Registry Mechanic also, you'd be surprised how much difference tidying up the registry makes!

Sounds profile related. If it works fine under your wifes ID but not yours, then create yourself a new account then delete the old one and profile...

Hi Danny

had a problem not that different to yours, turned out to be a spyware tracking program that had got on my pc from the internet, sorted it out with a free program from lavasoft called Ad-aware se personal might be worth a try.

Thanks guys! I really don't think this one is spyware related as I've scanned both HDD's with four different anti-spyware programmes! Nothing was found by any of them - not even tracking cookies!

I've got some time to work on this tomorrow so will give the various suggestions a go.

PK1 - think I've still got your number - will give you a call mate!

All the best,

Dan
