hello people!

im having a bit of a dilema right now in the car front.

i currently drive a mitsi fto but due to the stupidly high insurance im facing next year (£1247 im 23 and have 4ncb! fully comp) im thinking of finally turning the page to the 300zx.

ive been looking at them on eaby n auto trader and pestering the local import shop in birmingham about them but theres just somethings i need to know i hope you lot can tell me.

first of.. the biggie... fuel, in the NA whats it like in comparison to the fto. i get about 160miles to 20£ of optimax. (im to scared to fill the tank up. that and more weight to move means more fuel to burn)

and lastly would i be silly not to get the turbo? what kinda fueling is that like?

i ask because i do city driving. the insurance doesnt bother me at 640£ for the 3.0 auto t-top.

if you convince me enough i might convert to the dark side.

go and test drive a couple and see what you think, or try and get to a local meet as i'm sure some of the members on here wont mind taking you out for a spin or let you have a good poke around

hi mate! and welcome! i'm 21 with a 91 twin turbo auto and fuel was a big issue for me to.i honestly get about 21mpg allround.thats on a 40 mile round trip with a bit of motorway and a bit of traffic. my dad has a 96 NA auto and to be honest his fuel consumption isnt alot better than mine!! he gets about 25mpg allround on the same journey. i'm glad i bought the twin turbo because i know it would eat away at me not having the extra performance,i know it gets to him knowing i can blow him away!!lol another thing to consider is repair bills. obviously the turbo will be more expensive to fix than an N/A if it goes wrong but its a burden i'm more than willing to bare as the car more than makes up for it!! either way both cars rock!!! :)

You need speak to chris p on this front

Fookin ell i wish i got that consumption............i can blow £20 in 30mins if i try hard enough !!!!

OR get a zed then convert it to gas, a bloke at a car show, showed me it on a 4x4 i asked him if it could be dun on a zed he said yes but very very hard to do, thats if your worried about fuel, personally if your thinking about that then one of the blokes hit the nail on the head, THE ZED ISNT FOR YOU

My NA does on average 22 miles per gallon of fuel, if the only reason you want to change is financial then maybe the Z is the wrong choice??? personally I love it when people see the car and wave, stop to ask about it or just stare as you drive past. To walk back to my car and see it surrounded by kids who instead of looking inside to see what they can steal are just waiting to see the driver and ask questions, men who just want to ask where they can get one from and maybe just occasionally women who want to go for a ride. The joy of looking out of the window and seeing this car on my drive is enough for me to want to keep it forever.

well okay so i gather 160 miles (and i am granny driving an auto non mivec here) will be more then 20£

either way that will be okay as ill save a fortune on insurance bills.

repair wise im engine savvy, ive built a raced tuned calibra 8v from scratch, fettled with my fto and rebuilt a 3sgte engine for 'fun'.. oh yea and helping turbo a gen 7 celica lol.

ive been wanting the 300 for a long time now i just love them. i only ever drive 15 miles at most a day. the odd trip to dudley on the m5 and thats it really.

i just cant justify the fto's grp 20 insurance and its more then a evo 8 insurance costs when i can have a sleep smooth powerhouse of pure breed jap performance and that all important rwd ive been missing since my mr2 days.

oh yea while im thinking about it.... ski's.... i ski, alot, what the boot like LOL!

Why on earth is the FTO Group 20 !?

Ski's.....With the rear seat down it should'nt be a problem. Boot was originally designed to fit in a set of golf clubs in bag.

If your really after performance, go or the TT. IMHO. The NA offers similar perfomance to a FTO GPX, but probably wont feel as fast. The TT will feel like a Missile in comparison to the FTO.

the Z is a an awsome car both N/A and TT i drive an n/a now but have had both .. use my n/a as a daily drive n roughly do £100 a week on fuel in and around london , as for being savvy i thought that when i got my first TT till i decided to upgrade the engine n fit jim wolf turbos .... never! ,, again lol... must be every mechanics nitemare ,,, but hey .. great to drive .. specialy with the panels out

i just wait till i go to ashow then my engine gets a full over hall by the blokes, i dont think theres been one meet were we havent worked on my car, lol thx boys, i fitted my new rad myself though Yippy, i new i should have been a mechanic, my next mission, to fit my front mount, this should be fun........................... not

When i had my Z a few years ago me and my mate went to a meet in Nottingham (i had a TT he had a NA) i used £10 less fuel than him!

Bob

I used to have a t-top mr2 and loved it in the summer just pootling about.

i think i get 25£ a week in fuel? about that. but im guess you do more miles around london, also theres very little traffic apart from the 6pm finish at work but its mostly easily going and i average about 37mph ... tis a dilema.

oh yea fto cant fit clubs... nor skis, nor 2 people in the back (unless they are anorexic oompaloompas.

Motorway driving at a constant speed Im confident a TT will offer better mpg than a NA. (TT not producing boost, running lower compression ratio)

Play with the loud pedal and that all changes though

Its amputee's or small children in the back of a zed too Im afraid

i managed to get from birmingham to southhampton ferry port on 1/4 tank of fuel in the fto at a constant 70...ish. thats... 16ltrs not bad im guessing but its not like ill be doing that anytime soon.

i like the seats in that 300, i take it thats a leather upgrade n not standard?

oh and theres more room then in my fto. i have racing harnesses n no rear seats cause they are so pointless.

ive just been to my local import shop, they will offer me 4500 for the fto.

4500 could get me a niceish tt import could it not?

I noticed on your first post you mentioned buying an Auto, and high insurance premium on your previous car have tempted you to the ZX, but if you are concerned about fuel consumption, add the savings of your insurance reduction to the increase in fuel, then remembering that you will own a car over 10 years old and factor in a possible 60k due service, other wear and tear parts then autobox failure, and the saving you make on the insurance may seem unjustified...

Having said that, if you are seriously committed to owning A ZX, they are when well maintained an absolute pleasure to own and drive :D :D

Yup no probs there. :smash:

if i get one from the import shop then i get 6months tax, years mot and 6 months warrenty on all poarts no matter what happens.

came in handy when my ecu gave up, the spoiler clips broke and the intake manifold sucked up 3 ltrs of water from a deeper then i expected puddle lol.

now the big question.... what colour.

im thinking black or white.

Depends if you want to blend in or stand out from the crowd?? ;)

Black and standard flat red are the most common colours, dark red, like mine, is quite rare, yellow, blue and green are rearer still.

i was looking through the for sale section at 4am this morning lol. problem is i dont have the 4500 and im sure if i ebay it or auto trade my car it will go for less then 4500... im going to put it on fleabay with a reserve, its a shame to see it go but hey, 300zx becons now, i think i have the turbo power bug.
