my grandparents inlaw(who are both in there 80's) have an 806 diesel which they took to a main dealers to get repaired for excessive smoking engine.they replaced a couple of injectors and they said "the blue smoke was caused by crankshaft woodruff key damaged and caused pulley to move out of time.

they have supposidly replaced this new belt ect and a service which cost them a total of £600.

they have had the car back a couple of weeks but now it wont even start at all now. when i saw it the batt was flat but tried starter pack on it car turned over but not wanting to go? really want to help them as £600 is alot of money for them to shell out without having the car on the road.

i recommended them to take to an independent garage for assesment?

Hi mate

Diesels, especially old ones, need a decent battery to crank them over as diesel starts and runs on compression rather than a spark! Once started it will run without the battery which is just to run the lights and electrics rather than provide ignition to the engine.

As your grandparents are in their 80's i'd also bet this car only does short runs to the shops and back (which drains the battery) and never gets a decent run to get rid of carbon build up! My advice would be to to either hook the Z up with jump leads rather than power pack and try to crank it with the z idling at 2.5k revs....if it starts then go and spend £50 on a new heavy duty battery and fit that!

If it does start, also get some diesel injector cleaner in the fuel and give it a decent run along a motorway/dual carriageway and get the revs up a bit as i suspect that it never gets any 'work' and builds up carbon on the injectors and pistons which will add to the smoking!

If none of the above works the timing could all be out again and i woud return it to the garage that looked at it and get them to check it...the woodruff key is supposed to keep the timing belt pully/flywheel in place and may well have come adrift again..in which case it could be that the keyway/crankshaft are worn and a new 'oversized' key or specialist repair would be required in which case i'd take it to a an engineering workshop rather than a main dealer OR independant garage !

Hope this helps.

Let me know how you get on!

try checking the glow plugs and check that fuel is comming thru by cracking an injector

where abouts are they located if close enough can come and have a look for you or some body close may be willing to help out :)

i would say glow plugs if it's not starting usual diesel car problem will start eventually though give that a try jumped off the z if it eventually starts get a set of glow plugs in there

thank you all for your advice.

i live in bournemouth but my grandparents inlaws live in alton hampshire.

i know absolutly nothing about diesel engines so all the advice is great.

um im being thick now but how do you crack an injector??

Air leaks are also a problem for diesels, will cause excessive smoke and very tough starting. I know some old ones have a fuel primer hand aperated bulb thing, which you need to pump with yur hands if theres and air leak, thus system loosing pressure.

Not sure if new engines do but my Peugeaot/Citroen diesel engine does.

Heres a thought, check the fuel filter, most diesels have a water drain in the fuel filter and im sure most of the peugeots have this, if the fuel filer, hasnt been changed or even had the water drained from it, it can overflow the recess it goes into and thus contaminate the diesel with water, and a diesel with water in the fuel it will not start.

Alot of the newer engines now have a sensor on the water drain to warn you before this happens.

Good luck.
