Well I have a 1990 Jap Twin Turbo auto, that needs a new water pump and turbo fitted. Can anyone advise on how difficult a job this is to do?? Also rough guide what a mechanic should charge to do it as I have the parts ok?? Would this be a possible DIY job? I'm condesedering breaking the car if my mechanic is talking big £££££££££!!!!!

Waterpump is part of the 60k service, so if the cambelt has'nt been changed its best to get the full service done, as labour involved is pretty much the same. £400-£500 from a zed specialist for full service including all parts.

New turbo(s) involves engine out. Depending on which side its on, it is possible to do it with engine in..but either way its wont be cheap!

waterpump is a fairly simple job,all thats involved is to have the front of the engine stripped,ie..radiator belts, covers c pulley

turbo idealy is engine out job some have replaced the passenger turbo in situ but i dont recomend, and idealy whilst the engine is out,you may aswell replace both turbos, save yourself a load of grief Labour costs would be anything from £500 upwards

So quite a bit of work involved then!!! Not much change from £1000 I would say. I think I might dismantle this one too.

Well its not a difficult job to change the waterpump yourself. New waterpump is about £90, and as Greg says its a case of removing rad, waterpipes, cam covers and main pulley to to get to it.

As for the turbo..are you sure one has failed..what are the symptons ?

The symptons is very loud noise up beside the manifold, loss of power, some smoking. It's seems to be the turbo on the passanger side too. Car starts and drives ok, just low boost and loud.

sounds like the manifold may be leaking which can cause the car to feel slow, but if smoking its likely the turbo has failed,is it smoking on 1 bank or both exhausts

It's def not the manifold, had a look underneath and it's good and tight. There seems to be a gap or gasket gone where the turbo is? If you reach down you can feel a gap. Maybe I'm away off on that part or its nothing? Very hard to do anything on these cars without a garage lift at home!! Also coil packs need replaced too. Smoke coming from 1 side only. Not alot of smoke though.
