Hi. Just thought I would ask you guys if my washing machine is beyond repair or not. Astrassuck is aware of the problem but had no input. Basically a week ago i got up and the washer had been put on for overnight but all the lights were flashing and the display said E1  . Anyway we got past that but every time the drum starts to spin there is a noise like I have left a lighter or something in the drum. But there isn't anything in the drum so I can only assume it is something to do with the things that make it work. It is still turning and everything at the moment. I have posted this problem on the forum i use a lot and the girls are saying it is the weights and it can't be fixed. What do you guys think?? I know men are good at fixing things ;)

sounds a bit knackered if you ask me. My recommended course of action would be to fetch the lid off (there will be a sticker on there saying something to the tune of "Only a qualified professional should remove the cover" and "Always disconect from the mains before removing cover"), you should ignore these and carry on regardless ;), then switch that badboy on and see whats making the noise :D

Is the noise when the drum turns or when the pump starts?

Open the door and turn the drum by hand. Does it sound/feel rough?

Might be the bearing at the back which the drun spins on, easy to fix, about £30.00 from the internet for most models. Common fault.

Or perhaps bits in the pump, as someone else said, when the drum turns how does it feel?

Whats a Washing Machine

Seriously though, if you still have the user manual for the machine it should tell you what E1 means, TBH its usually cheaper to buy a new one than have the bloody things repaired.

Hope you get it sorted.

PS

I cant believe Ben had no input

Heres a thought . the drum basically has an outer skin and i have come across money before gettin in to the outer drum and rattling...but then again could be bearings if its hotpoint w/machine then it will be bearings !!"

nope, youre all wrong, I had this the other week. Not the code as it dont have a flashy display on my machine, but I did have the sounds of something metalic scraping around inside. However that will only put you on a wild goose chase.

The noise you are actually hearing is the motor 'arcing', this is because i'll bet your brushes have worn out. Since they have worn out they are fractionally just too short to reach the armature of the motor and the current is arcing across.

When it ws suggested to me that this might be the problem i was sceptical because it didnt sound like any arcing i've ever heard,i simialry thought bearings or something, but removal of the motor did indeed prove this to be the case. 20 quid for a new set of brushes from a local shop and jobs a guddun, one happy washing machine.

if it is hoover washing machine , which im guessing as you said it displayed e1,, if you need spares try this lot very good http://www.ezee-fix.co.uk/ a;sp if its a hoover washing machine if its less than 5 yrs old they have to repair the machine for 80 pounds ,, which is there call out charge, "call an approved hoover engineers"

even if it needs new progs new drum new everything ,as you get 5yrs parts warranty on all hoover machines ,, hope this helps, if it its older than five yrs then try that website above for parts cant be beat on price,, only no this info above as we have 5 kids , washing machines last about 4 yrs in our place,, so no them quite well , but not to fix, except for belts etc , there easy ,

yep get mr asstrastruck to take motor out and have a look, bushes piece of piss, to replace, if not get him to post pics and we can have a laugh on here telling him how to do it, , hth,, paul

or theres one other possiblity.

when they make the drum they roll the tube then a rear and front gets attatched, on my old on one of the scres/rivets on the front had come loose thereby when going round it would hit the outer ring as it went by, took me days to find it... after checking all of the above, but its easy, all you do is empty machine, lay it on its back undo the side fixings and front ones and lift front away you will see the front of the drum and running round the front of it are the fixings screwing it to the side of the drum, check them for tightness..

otherwise go here...

Thanks very much guys. I am more confused than before  But Ben has not heard this sound (he is always in bed). It is a Hoover machine and have no idea how old as it is third hand lol. But will check all the above methinks. I think the noise starts as the drum starts to turn but not noticed it on a spin cycle

LOL I am always in bed because its impossible to get anything done in the day so there is no point being up :D But I will have a look at the brushes, they're dead easy done it 100 times before, also will have a look at the bearings.

IMHO I think its time to look for a new one it looks quite old and a new one may be better in the long run.

The bearing went in a washing machine I had and it was a nightmare to change, plus other stuff was on the way out too (the front plate seal or something).

I'd ended up getting a new one - probably the way forward if yours is getting on a bit.

We have just watched the washing machine and it appears that the machine is having difficulty turning the drum. Ben says it could be the belt that has gone. Would this also make a 'clunk-clunk' noise?

Right, as an ex-washing machine mechanic :D I would recommend, as stated above, checking the motor brushes. If they are OK check out the belt while you have the lid/back off (depending on model). Also rotate the drum by hand and, as also stated above, check for roughness/ any noises there as well. Then come back and tell us your findings, and I could diagnose from there :D All the above actions should take yu no more than about five minutes, including removing the screws.

HTH

Right thats

Call out (to my PC) £21.50

Time spent on diagnose 1x £5.50 (per 15 minutes)

=Total £27.00.................. Cash or cheque will do :D lol
