Strange noise

I have a strange noise coming from the front end of the car. It sounds (no laughing please) like someone spraying an aerosol room freshener. It doesn't happen all the time though. Any ideas what might be the cause/sure?

    yes ... A boost leak sounds quite probable ....

    No this isn't a dump valve noise cos I haven't got them and its an auto. I wouldn't have thought it to be a boost leak cos it seems to happen at low speeds pottering round town. Boost seems normal to me. Thats why im confused!
