What do yo mean, small front plate?

I have seen a car with a front number plate about the size of a US one.

I can tell you now they are totally illegal.

If you mean the square ones. I think you can get away with it.

Stuart

I've had a square plate on the front of mine for 3 years with no problems.

Martin, are you talking about the small rectangular plates often seen on rally cars?

My mate had one of these on his Elise and it was obviously too small, even from quite a distance but I don't think he ever got stopped. On a Z it'd probably look even smaller. I still quite fancy the idea of getting one though!

Hi guys thanks for the replies. Yeah I am talking about the small rectangle ones, I do know these are illegal but am I thinking it *may* be worth the risk.

I am getting the new 99 OEM bumper soon and don't want to pollute it with a f*** off normal sized plate frown.gif

Anyone know the law on using one of these? As I see it coppers can't see it from behind and from the front would probably not turn around to pull me. Of course there are other situations where they could pull me.

If you get pulled over for it it is a motoring offence and you can get fined and have points put on your license I believe,

I think they look silly as well but thats my opinion

nope that is too small, they are in the middle of those and legal plates smile.gif and very good point about the rally cars not being pulled.

edited cos i'm sure this is not an endorsable offence - anyone?

On the other hand these rally cars do drive on our roads between stages, so why don't they get pulled?

Cos they are too fast.

There main reason probably is that a larger number plate would stop air getting to the radiator and make the car over heat. That is the reason some cars have the stick on plates. Scoobys and E-Type Jags come to mind.

I agree with you Mike. I think they look silly too.

There are new laws about spacing and letter size. The letter have to be at least a certain size.

They also want it so when a numberplate is printed, the post code of the shop that did it is printed in the plate too, so any ilegal plates found, the shop can be done too.

I think it comes under the Construction and Use regs, which is almost certainly endorsable. Tyres are the same!

What if you make them yourself? wink.gif

I think having a great big piece of white plastic stuck on the front of the car looks much sillier.

And I'm sure the back-street shops will comply with that law!

Try here Martin. The bike section may have what you want. http://www.impact-signs.co.uk

i think the shop postcode on plates has already been made law, last september i believe.

although i'm sure some shops still have "old stock", it is the blank plate manufacturers that are responsible for ensuring the postcode is on the plate before they supply it i think.

the plate itself can be any size, but the lettering and spacing has to obey the legal guidelines

if any letters are spaced wrongly or misrepresented in any way, then it should be an MOT failure. therefore, if you have a dodgy plate, it is not a roadworthy vehicle, hence you can get done.

that is the law, like or not.

i had to change plates for my mot for that reason, and i asked the tester to show me all the legal stuff out of curiosity. not their fault, they only do as they are told....

i take my car for strict mot because i want to, finding a more lenient tester is not always a good thing....

AndyP, wasn't it you who posted the URL? some graphics place or something.

Before reading your last post i thought bolloxs to it there is NO way i'm getting points for it.

Interesting reading from Craig "the plate itself can be any size, but the lettering and spacing has to obey the legal guidelines"

as the new font is quite small, well certainly smaller than the old one. I have this font on my rear plate and it look ok.

Might see how small i can get the plate with the new font but still leagal.

Thanks for the link Dave smile.gif

and I only have a 5 character number plate, time to do some maths me thinks smile.gif

It may look silly, but it's the law.

sorry Stuart I have to say this, smoking a joint is against the law but it doesn't mean i don't do it biggrin.gif

ok have done the maths but I don't know what "Stoke" means?

ignoring that bit wink.gif I can get the plate down to 338mm width by 101mm height.

anyone know the size of a standard plate?

10x2.5 me thinks.

(Puff)

Smoking is a whole different area though biggrin.gif

i get them made at a shop near me you dont get the post code or any questions asked...anything you like £24 for front and back and any size ask anyone how small the one is on the front of mine and ive been pulled many a time and not got done for it

Hi Andy

I don't have a definate source yet but I went to Nissan's repair centre and gave them the part no that Eric posted. I don't have the quote with me but they quoted around £380+vat for it.

I am actually not going to go with them and try and source myself. I emailed courtesy today and waiting their reply.

I have presumed that as I have a Jap spec my current lights will fit? even though I do need to get a nearside fog. (Nissan's repair quote didn't include for other lights.)

As soon as I know more i will post it.

Cheers

p.s. this is a insurance claim.

I take it no one above saw my plates at the rolling road day then.

Been followed, looked at & had plod walk pass the car, not a word!!! biggrin.gif

Thats done it!

harve.
