Firstly I apologise if this is the wrong place for this but it seems the most appropriate.

So I'm totally new to this idea of buying a 300zx, up until a week ago I wasn't even considering it. I've loved 300zx's since I first clapped my eyes on them many, many years ago but until the recent apparent massive drop in price I never considered the idea of owning one. (and until the wife said "they look nice")

If I *were* to take the plunge I'd be looking at an NA manual for around £3-3.5k, what I need from you people is to tell me the truth, tell me how expensive they are to run, how completely impractical they are and how you wish you owned a simple runabout.

A little background, I'm 25, it would be my only car but I don't rely on a car for transport, it's be used daily for a short work run and some random trips,, really not a huge number of miles. Insurance quotes are coming in at £1500 which I can deal with. I'm trying to convince myself under the idea that I can throw some money at a zx for a year, if it gets too expensive I'll cut my losses and sell.

I just want a chance while I'm still young.

But! It's your job to convince me this is a stupid idea, tell me just how expensive these things are to run.

I have had my ZX since last friday and i in luuurve with it. Its the real deal sports car. Performance is awesome. It looks awesome. What goes with the ZX territory is 150 miles for £30 of fuel and i assume some expensive maintenance.

You dont make decisions about owning a sports car with your mind, its with the heart.

As you have one years driving experience a ZX may kill you. If you dont fear it, it will bite your balls off.

!

Hes hit it on the head Powerfull fast fun awsome horny and expensive :hyper: Like any car regular preventitive maintenance is a way of preventing expensive repairs (other than suprise failures !) Fuel consumption is a killer on the Turbo not sure on the N/A ?

Don't buy one. You'll be peaking too early in life. Have a family instead.

Is that highway or city driving? My TT gets real poor milage in the city. It begs for the open road

Same as that i dont even keep a check on it any more i just put fuel in and drive then put some more and then ..........etc

Its never ending went Ipswich to Reading £40 averaging 60-70 mph on motorway no problem at all . Round town i can blow £40 in about 70-80miles :headvswal

30 pounds of fuel lasts u 150 miles??? is yours a tt or n/a?

I've often done 200 miles on £30, motorway driving (80mph constant).

Dont quote me on this, but I suspect that the TT will be more economical than the NA when your off-boost (eg. steady Motorway driving). Completely opposite when your on-boost though.

not gonna convince you not to get one, had mine for nearly 2 years, blown the engine twice, just had it re-chipped by the masterful Mr Dixon, its my daily driver and I love it!!

do it now

regret it later

Just do it

I Had a Porsche 944 Turbo at 24

and a XJS AT 25

(no rich daddy, i worked 13 hour shifts to afford my cars)

and when I couldn't afford em I sold them.

But at least I don't sit round going "if only"

;)

Mine is a TT - £30 for 150 miles. When i drove back from Southampton to Birmingham and a bit of other driving i got about 190 miles for £30. Urban driving is a lot worse than 150 miles. But at the moment i am driving it like a kid with a new toy - ooh nice long fast straight - vrooom!

lol, i have been driving mine like a 17 yr old ever since I swapped my JWT for one of Mr Dixons "specials"..lol

oh btw anybody who thinks JWT chips are the nuts....... WRONG ..lol

Well holy carp, I've just chatted to my new best friends at Elephant and they gave me various low quotes, way lower than anyone else. They even offered me £860 for a TT. That's about a quarter of what anyone else has quoted.

And now I'm going to show off my embaressing lack of Z knowledge. They told me the last non turbo ZX's of UK spec were from 1990, any N/A car passed that is an import. This fact means the quotes are back up to £1400. Is this correct?

There were NO UK spec non-turbo's Z32 300zx's. Uk spec is TT 2+2 only, everything else is import.

I suspect they mean the older 300zx, the Z31. Which ended production in 1989.

You may find UK TT cheaper to insure than an NA (becuase its an import).

Eurgh, as happy as I am a turbo is cheaper than i ever imagined.. I still don't particularly want one.

I've had the temporary euphoria of a cheap quote, only for it to rocket back up for an import. This sucks!

Test drive both, before deciding.

Don't buy one. Me and all the rest of the peeps on this forum are the only people in the UK who know just how great the Z really is. We want to keep our roads exclusive, can't have them full of Z's - that won't do.

...start a family. It's equally time consuming and expensive.

repairs can be expensive. parts even more (get from USA saves mega bucks)

lardy cars which depreciate fast. Look dated, window wipers on rotary dial (ie. gay). Looks like a dick extension. Shows you can't afford a REAL (ie. expensive) sports car. Use lots of fuel. Rear seats for kids only. A car for anoraks - it's a wise buy but boring really  might as well buy a better computer/hi-fi. Only good for impressing pre-pubescent kids and other techies. Might as well put up a sign up saying "I bought this to get laid" but no-one falls for it  Headligths are cr@p at night unless mdoify them -agin, good for anoraks. Often been retrofitted with gay guages and usually a Dungeons & dragons board in the boot  or a CD of Metallica/Sting.......

you'll want to modify it, then you'll be broke ! Mgiht as well throw money in the bin rather than a dated lardy Jap pretend supercar driven by nerds :x:

most garages won't touch them. insurance can be a nightmare. girls want money not a flash car -with this car you won't have much money, so will look stupid - your house will probably be smaller than this car is my bet ! Might as well live in it, but the targas will probably leak !

no good for crime/kerp crawling, as too few around - you'll easily be found on Crimewatch.

Don't buy one.

Worst car on the road.

No performance, no style, no impact, anywhere, anyhow.

I've had 4 and own 2 at the moment, so I should know.

:)
